Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Bareges / La Mongie

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Evening all! First post here so thanks for having me.

Looking at heading to the slopes for the first time with my four year old daughter, she'll be just 5 in fen when we go at half term, good deals from where we are (Jersey) in Bareges, near La Mongie. Anyone any experience of this village? Looks really lovely and doesn't see as expensive as the Alps.

One of my main concerns is ski school. Was thinking I'd try to get her in for morning sessions - but I need to find someone English speaking. My earliest memories of skiing when I was small is overshadowed by the German ski instructors shouting at me, determined she will have a more friendly start! Any recommendations?

Lastly, any general tips on first ski holidays with kids?

Thanks x

Welcome to Snowheads, Butlers, Very Happy. I know nothing of that area but, like you, I was attracted by it. I have lots of experience of kids and skiing though. Make skiing just a part, and maybe not the major part, of the holiday and be prepared to be flexible. And ready to sacrifice your own snow time. A few lessons in a snowdome would be good. You might struggle with English speaking ski school if most of the kids are francophone but perhaps private lessons would be affordable. If the 5 year old is the only child and not a child prodigy about to sit A level maths maybe you could avoid the very busy half term week?

Was hoping to get a couple of hours skiing a day maybe, but certainly don't expect much more, but being in a village setting appeals because at least there should be a few other things to do during the day.

Sadly we can't avoid half term...as we're in Jersey, and the holiday we're looking at only has direct links during half term - we would sleeper coach directly. Otherwise it's a flight to LGW, overnight stay and flight to France then transfer, makes it all so protracted and even more expensive. Using the coach we leave here on Sun pm, have 5 days skiing and are back on Saturday morning, still with a 24hr recovery period before school/normal routine restarts! All quite appealing to me.

There's very little to do in Bareges itself apart from lying in the sulphur baths.........

that doesn't follow. "Activities" other than skiing are more common in substantial developed resorts.

Depends what you mean Pam W, by activities I mean cafe's to see, village centre to explore, gentle slopes for taboganing not the commercialised activities found in the big resorts. It doesn't take much to keep us amused, after all it is meant to be a break too

There is a very good esi ski school with
English speaking instructors. The village
Is pretty with some restaurants and bars
The ski area is varied and suitable for
Children. We live in the next village and
Ski there lots. I have two kids 6 & 10,
So can recommend. You also have the
Possibility to ski luz ardiden and gavarnie in
addition to bareges-la mongie.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

The skiing on the Bareges side is very tame, but the La Mongie side is a bit more interesting. On the other hand, Bareges is "prettier", La Mongie a bit purpose-built and ugly.

Haven't been there in about 15 years mind you...
