Poster: A snowHead

Hi All
Due to family commitments and tight budget we are considering a ski trip on 13 dec this year.
We went to la plagne llast year and had a great week of weather and reasonable snow.
The one drawback was the number of runs/lifts that were open as a fair number were shut even though snow conditions were ok. Maybe the lift operating company were just saving on staff numbers as I recall we got half price ski passes.
Was this normal for La Plagne for this first week of the season?
Other than that we had a lovely week and were looked after by two Youngsters in an inghams chalet who at 17 and 18 years old did a job they can be very proud of. (Dougal and Emily just in case anyone from Inghams reads this)
I would be very grateful for any comments on the above, or any advice for a value for money week elsewhere for 13 dec
Regards Mick

Mick8417, what you found last year was entirely normal.
As stated on their website: La Plagne opens this year for "Altitude" on December 13, but for "Villages" a week later on December 20.
Altitude means many of the lower lifts will not be working for that first week: you won't be able to ski over to the Montchavin, Montalbert or Champagny sectors, and the Vanoise Express won't be running.
Hence why the lift pass is half price. It is also pleasantly quiet that week.
Years ago there used to be quite a party atmosphere on the day the resort opened fully with drinks and sweets at each lift. This seems to have stopped in recent years. A real shame.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Thanks I've looked all over the website for that info, I'm not complaining as we still had a good week and for the cost of half price passes it was ok, just a bit limiting after 3 or 4 days. I will still consider going back, and as you say the queues were non existent and pistes empty.

Mick8417, it sounds good, actually. To stave off the boredom, might it be possible to get a private lesson?

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

It seems to be 25% off this year which is less attractive but still ok. The master plan is to try boarding if we really ski out the available pistes as my 2 teenage boys fancy it and we would all be beginners. I think the ski hire shop we used last year would swap over to boards for ten euros or so.
It would be nice to try somewhere different though if anyone has any suggestions.
Tignes seems to be the obvious choice but chalet accommodation seems to be at least £150 each more expensive there and I guess the ski passes are more as well.

Hi Mick8417,
In the same way as last year La Plagne will open on a staggered system at the start of the season. So, on the weekend of the 13th/14th only the altitude areas are open and they gradually open a few more and then the lower areas and Vanoise express opens on the Saturday 20th.
One option which works well for that week is to book your holiday Sunday - Sunday. That way you still get the reduced price pass (including for the last day) but on the sixth day of skiing the whole area is open so you get to explore a bit further.
We work in La Plagne so feel free to message me if you have any questions??

Not being too familiar with early season I am beginning to get worried re the lack of snow.
Most of the webcams seem a bit green. Is it safe to book or should I wait.

I've been ADH the week before Christmas week and it was fine. Just a thought.

@Mick8417, --- Why not head further up the valley --- Tignes and Val Despair will def have more open than La Plagne that week.

Yes I had similar thoughts but even they look very green at the moment?
problem is we are stuck with those dates and are all desperate for a snow fix. The thought of not going is just depressing.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

No point in looking at the webcams now. There is always a risk at the periphery of the season that conditions will be poor. La Plagnes, Tignes, ADH, you will be OK.

@Mick8417, I've skied that week for the last 15 years at least ... never not been able to ski --- always found some good snow. Some years are better than others... but if you go high (Val, Tignes, Zermatt etc) you'll be fine
