Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Who might mend warped skis?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
As I mentioned in a thread a couple of months ago, after I broke my leg I left my skis by a radiator for 3 months and they (well, mostly one of them) warped. Basically the front half of the ski change from a slight camber to a reverse camber.
I tried to reverse it, tying it under a strain with a small blow heater warming it up for a week, but it only improved it a little.
Is there anyone who I might go to, to see if they could reverse it? It wouldn't matter that much if the skis were destroyed in the attempt since they are gone now, for all practical purposes.

I'd try repeating the cause again. Put them under strain again, but this time for a month or so next to the same radiator.

Mosha Marc, the trouble is our radiators are off, rather than at full blast as in mid winter, and the blow heater made my studio unusable for that week (or actually nearer 2 weeks). Also I don't want to wait 3 months to see if it works. I need to decide if I need new skis.

You may be able to correct the twist/revers camber by making a jig to hold the ski in the reverse shape - 2" x 4" or something similar with bits screwed to it in the right places. T
hen heat it with a heat gun, you need to get it as hot as you dare, hotter than you can touch, just below the temperature where the finish starts to burn/brown.
The leave to cool.
It may take a few goes at this.
What you are trying to do is get the epoxy resin that holds the ski together to soften a bit and rehardedn in the correct shape - leaving it by the radiator for 3 months proves this is possible with your skis, it is not possible with all.
This technique does work, but it takes a lot of trial and error. Before building skis I used to modify existing skis using this method, with some sucess.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Thanks, Idris. Perhaps (but I'd need to buy a heat gun). Would I heat the top or bottom surface? The way I imagine the jig the top would be more exposed.

PS Anyone with a suggestion of a professional or semi expert to approach to do it would still be welcome.

under a new name, Ah yes. But he didn't volunteer and it says he is based in Chamonix - a bit of a hike from London. Or does he spend his Summers here?

snowball, IIRC your skis are the last of the full camber Missions? If so they've probably done quite a bit of mileage. The Missions did seem to a go a bit 'soft' after time which'd probably mean that they were more susceptible to the heat damage than others. IMO they're toast as if even if you could pull 'em back they'll certainly be mismatched as pair. The bindings could be recycled though.

I've got some really old Atomic Powder Plus (The Original Wide Ski!) which I put a good deal of early tip rise into.

I took off the bindings, chocked up the tips and then carefully drove my car onto them to put the fore-end under load.

Left it there a couple of days and the job's a good-un Wink

It did help that they are a full metal sheet construction inside though.

Sorry that is no use to you snowball, but your thread reminded me of doing it with Parlor's assistance (remember Parlor?)

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

Correction: I need new skis soon, but do I need some right now before I have test driven a few. (ie I need some to get back my ski legs at Hemel and to take out with me at the start of the season).

anarchicsaltire, normal camber both backs, very slight increased camber one front, strong reverse camber other front. Nah.

anarchicsaltire, Well this is the problem: I don't know. Even in terms of the widest modern shape categories I don't know.
I like and am used to a ski which can carve, so I don't know if I can like a ski which gets straight near the ends rather than continuing its radius. However that would cut out most if not all skis now intended as all mountain or off piste skis. Without actually experiencing a ski like that on real mountain off piste, how can I know. I just don't know what skiers of my vintage and experience favour now. I don't want a pure powder ski since a lot of the challenging snow I must ski is not powder and I don't want to skid around on an icy piste when I hit one. Powering around on open powder slopes is relatively easy (and I want very much to do it) but I am concerned to be able to get down steep narrow couloirs or breakable crust too. I used to be told I was an aggressive skier but I need to remember I am now 66. I need some sort of ski to use NOW as I get back onto skis after my broken leg. I had hoped I could use skis which were familiar so I could judge how my rehabilitation was going. I hired skis at Hemel when I tried a few days ago and they were horrible floppy things.

snowball, Nordica and Blizzard have several skis that would probably suit you well, depending on if you want metal or not and how wide you want to go. They both have several more traditional shapes with full length sidecut.

Saying that, tip and tail taper doesn't prohibit carving; you don't have edge contact in that section so you just use the sidecut section underfoot as with any other ski.
