Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Skins for short skis (151cm)

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Just bought daughter Salomon Q88 skis. 151 cm length as she is a short ass. Skis are twin tip style. She mainly does on piste (is BASI 2) but wants to do some touring. Can anyone confirm if all skins can be adjusted to this length please and/or recommend a brand which would work best.

Many thanks.

You'll need a special tool for that

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

davidof, thanks. am familiar with skin cutters on width. what i mean is are the tail tip hook things capable of being moved to this sort of length. Most talk about having a 10 cm room for adjustment (by using the strap eg black diamond). I have only used pre cut skins or skins for adult male ski sizes. unsure how it works down at 151 length

You could DIY it quite easily with a hole punch and some pop rivets. Cut the skins down and then remove and reattach the tail piece. The latest skins I bought had me doing this anyway as the tail part was not pre-attached.

you don't actually need a tail attachment. just cut the skin a couple of inches shorter than where the tail starts to turn up and round off the corners

also, a lot of tail attachments are pretty useless with twin tips - worth looking at something like this if you want to keep the attachments http://www.amazon.co.uk/G3-Connector-Touring-Backcountry-Adaptor/dp/B00402P7GQ?tag=amz07b-21

Or use the spare skin to make a Rat's Tail:
https://www.wildsnow.com/13689/rat-tail-climbing-skin-attach-tail/

This is very effective - until the user tugs wildly at the tail and rips it off completely. I rarely have words with Mrs A but did on that occasion.

chrisJersey, Have a look at the Sport Conrad website www.sport-conrad.com They have some Kohla Multifit * skins that come in short lengths (149, 156) I expect if you sent them an email with the ski dimensions they could recommend which size would fit best.
* Disclaimer: I have no idea about the quality or not of Kohla skins. Maybe some of the skins connoisseurs on here could advise on that!

Tail attachment on a twin tip: I bodged some skins to fit on some twin tips by using a tip connector on both ends. I had to be quite careful to get the correct length though. There's just enough give in the rubber to stretch each end over. They work fine and actually are less hassle than when I used the skins with the skis that they were originally designed for.

I've been using the Kohla Vacuum skins for the past season. They seem to be holding up nicely and no problems with stickiness.

All Colltex skins need cutting to length prior to attaching the tail clip so no problem for shorter skis other than you're paying for a lot of length that'll end up in the bin. And I have 'em in stock wink

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much
