Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Save the Kalkkögel Petition

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
If any of you have read anything of my snow conditions threads, you'll probably have realised that I really like the Kalkkögel mountains. If you read TGR, you'll probably have seen Marius's and Klar's incredible photos of the area too.

The Kalkkögel is basically a small chain of limestone mountains (hence the name) that are sometimes called the Dolomites of Tirol; a little haven full of ragged spires, towers and couloirs. They sit between the small ski resorts of Axamer Lizum and Schlick2000, and are currently a 'protected area.' Access is easiest from the Axamer Lizum side, where within half an hour's skinning from the car park you can be in this totally hidden, couloir-filled valley, away from the bustle of the lifts and ski resort. The area gets a lot of skin-traffic, as it's a favourite for most people who live in the Innsbruck region. You can often get a lap in before or after work, as it's so close to the city and so convenient with the easy access.

They look a bit like this (not my photos):

For the past few years there have been attempts to build lifts through these awesome mountains to link up the ski resorts, which have so far been thwarted on environmental grounds, and rightly so. It's one little refuge of wilderness amongst all the tourism and development in the area, a special place for a lot of people, and it would be a real real shame to ruin it by slinging noisy lifts in just for the sake of some more tourist €€€. Especially as both resorts are easy to get to on public transport currently, and even if combined the area still probably wouldn't be big enough to appeal to typical holiday skiers. Also note there won't be a middle station, the lift is planned to go all the way up and over, so wouldn't access any new terrain.

There are two petitions running currently, one for the lifts and one against. Currently there are less than two hundred signatures for, and several thousand against, so you can see how people over here feel anyway! Would be great if Snowheads could add a few more signatures!

Richard_Sideways, Laughing The lift won't actually access any of the terrain; there's no middle station planned so you won't be able to get off until the valley on the other side. You'll have to google for the other petition though NehNeh

ScaryG, thanks!

But what's wrong with that? It IS our back yard, and someone has to look after it!

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Mistress Panda, Laughing but not there isn't. They would have to break Austrian law to build the lift in the first place; there's no chance they'd be allowed to build one actually accessing the terrain!

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much
