Poster: A snowHead

Afternoon all, seeking a little professional advice from those in the industry.
Feel like I have somewhat hit a wall in the hydropower industry, and am looking for a new challenge. I'd like to explore the options within the ski industry.
Quick "me" update; I live in Austria (near the HEAD/Kässle office), speak the german, can ski (was an istructor for 5 seasons), am a "creative" engineer and can talk about ski kit and technique until all the girls at the table have left.
I would love to do something in ski-product development, but not really sure where to start (studied physics so while it helps with understanding it's not exactly a direct path in ) I know a fair amount about equipment (not like Jon or Colin, but I learn quick) but as a late starting Brit is that pretty much a closed door these days?
I also seem to be good at selling skis/gear, normally convince about 10-20 mates a season to buy new better kit and they pretty much always take my advice on type and brand etc, so is this a more worthwhile path?
Please be honest, basically i am just after ANY advice you can throw at me, dont worry i know i wont be rich, but I just love the sport too much.

Learn to talk to the 50% of the market then you double your selling opportunities.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Okey dokey, so we have learn to talk to girls and you're fecked... actually togther that's great advice but not quite what I was hoping for....
does anyone in the industry have anything to add? it's no issue if not, that's probably a good indicator as well!

I thought the hydro power industry was booming at the moment with all those new schemes in India and Pakistan

I would love to have my own product/business. But I have seen a lot of designs (mostly in renewables) fall flat on their face because the creator did not understand the market or had too little experience in a certain aspect of the industry, for example modern manufacture, clients wishes, legal issues etc. The best way to learn this would be on the job surely? Just starting a business with, for example a new glove is unlikely to take-off without understanding and building on the current technology and processes.
Will take your advice into account though, maybe some tiime on kickstarter is a good idea, see what others are doing. Part of my job is allocating funding to new renewable innovations so it would be interesting to see what parrallels can be made.
CH2O, Where/what is that? not heard of anything (why would I, I guess)
johnE, True, but our market is German speaking Europe. We are currently looking at new markets, or I could move of course. But I would like to take this opportunity to at least address possibilities in the snowy world.

dulcamara, what would you like to do? Materials r&d? Work with new shapes? Product testing? I guess that are few jobs doing that. I'd venture a guess that logistics and production management are where the great majority of engineering jobs are.
If you fancy taking a leap and going your own way, maybe you have the skill set to do power use/ planning/ optimisation/ conservation consulting.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

The electricity wholesale price in Germany is almost a third of the price it used to be in 2008. 90,90 €/MWh vs 34.20 €/MWh.

Didn't Idris set up his own ski manufacturing in Cham? - maybe he can give you some tips/help.

You know it makes sense.

dulcamara, Lahmeyer, the company I was working for in Pakistan is German. They were doing a lot of hydro projects in the upper reaches of the Indus. They even had engineers coming over the border from India.
