A gang of us are looking at going out to the alps next weekend to walk in the gran paradiso area.looking at weather reports it looks like the snow level is quite low for the time of year.ianyone know if it is a 'normal' start to the walking season.there is a 3000m col to pass......

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

The snow level is 2200 on north faces, much much higher on south faces. It is normal. You can find snowfields down to 1800 m in some spots. A 3000m col would probably have a permanent snow field if not glacier on the north side.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I've just come back from the northern French Alps - looked normal there, certainly.

This was last Thursday looking up towards the Col du Galibier circa 2,600 North Facing slope
I drove over Iseran and Mont Cenis on Tuesday and the bad weather resulted in snow to around 2,500 - weather not looking too good for the coming week, summer storms etc

Thanks guys-all very useful .have contacted some guides and it seems that a couple of cols have fair bit of snow on their northern aspect and crampons ma be required,so will have to postpone this little venture .early July was a bit ambitious it seems,

Walk in crampons then. It isn't hard.

I have used crampons before -I suppose its the unknown steepness that concerns me.not that confident in snow unless I am attached to 2 planks.

I spoke to a guide in Les Arcs today and he reported that the snow was in good condition: firm, little powder snow and low avalanche risk. Unlike late June last two years when there was powder snow down to 2300m. Will start on the Bellecote tomorrow.
