johnboy, try and make sure you have a room that is on the lakeside. That way you'll be on the other side of the building to the railway line. We stayed at the Seehof (just along from the Grand) a couple of years ago, and the Austrians like to run very long, frequent goods trains through the night!!!

Still plenty at village level. the lake is still frozen with about 1ft of snow ontop of the ice.

Went to Saalbach today.
Highlight of the trip so far. Did a full circuit, starting and finishing in Vorderglemm, going Anti-Clockwise. Took about 4.5 hours in total including lunch and short beer stop. Saalbach is now on my list for a full week next year.
Only about 20 mins on the bus from Zell (Leaves every hour)
Snow conditions still very good, probably slightly more in Saalbach than Zell. 0 degrees at 2000m, so warming up a bit, but no slush at all.

You should definately go, it is a really nice area and much bigger than Zell.
Plan to do Kaprun tomorrow and St Patrick's Day back in Zell am See

I think it was the Sportalm. So many places to choose from. Saalbach is a really top resort

Don't know about ski school, but Mrs JB hired skis and boots from Intersport, below the cityexpress gondola station. Very efficient staff. That's where I bought the skis too

You should go to the Grand Hotel for a drink. Harry the barman will look after you, he is a top bloke. Crazy Daisys is right beside the grand and is good for Apres Ski as is Daile.

We're off to Zell in January, so the snow should be good. Has anyone stayed at the Seehof Hotel? My wife likes cheap, family run hotels and I'm always dubious (though rarely disappointed) . Anyone got any reviews?
