Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Google street view now shows European pistes

The Google snowmobile has been busy, filming around the pistes of Europe: http://googlepolicyeurope.blogspot.co.uk/2013/12/ski-with-street-view.html

I don't think they are all done, but I found La Thuile, Cervinia, Gstaad and Solden for a start.

Just drag and drop the little yellow person icon on the piste, then take a virtual trip round the slopes!

I noticed the other day some parts of the alps appear to have ski lifts now on google maps if you zoom in far enough Smile

Quite a few have had street err piste view and lifts on maps for a while now (was a thread on it near the start of the season I think).
Sella Ronda was one of the first, and is indeed already wrong (both piste view and lifts), but then the landslide this time last year played a part there. It won't let you submit/suggest map corrections either. Openstreetmap maps have pistes/lifts and are probably more up to date in many cases.

koru, What do you mean by drag and drop the yellow person icon? It does not work for me.
I can only use arrows but this is not that smooth.

Tom W,

The yellow person is only used to 'drop' you into street/piste view -- then it is a case of using the arrows (or mouse cursor) to get you around (and, as you say, not that smoothly !)

Tom W, you can do that in the new google maps by dragging and dropping Pegman (as the little yellow man is called) in the pop-up map in the bottom corner

Doesn't look like the snowmobile can manage black runs. On the resorts I have looked at, there's no piste view for the black runs.

Tom W, You Tube has videos of most runs. But I agree it would be nice if Google Maps would automatically show you a skier's view of the route.

Bumped into the Google Snowmobile back in 2014 on a Grand Montets piste, Chamonix.

Never seen it published anywhere. Anyone know what happened to this project?

Shame they used a Snowmobile. Would have been a nice job to go down every piste with a camera on your helmet and take the videos for them. Very Happy Very Happy

tbf, I've often used google maps to look around some of the ski areas. Useful if planning distances for links on a day out. Never tried street view. Just assumed that the villages were on it, but not the slopes.

Some of the lifts can be seen on the satellite view, but not all pistes are marked on the maps. Obviously, as the satellite is only updated every few years, they will not always be accurate.

There are websites built on top of OpenStreetMap that show pistes, this one seems quite good.
