DB: Re the "reverse-stem" the initially lower ski is often a bit faster starting around - especially if you use the steep technique of stamping on the upper ski to take-off. It normally lands OK, though. |
Yes I remember jumping off the uphill ski on steeps was discussed in this thread.

Ah, I missed that thread. Remy Lecluse was one of the greatest extreme skiers and was demonstrating on a super steep slope so the suggestions from one or two people about using a one or two pole plant were a bit off. It can give greater stability to the start of the turn - though I admit I haven't developed the technique. You don't just use jump turns because of difficult snow (as someone suggested) but in order not to get up any speed on the turn on a very steep slope. Remy was talking about turning on a pocket handkerchief (presumably the French version of the old "turning on a sixpence").

moffatross, I missed this report when you first posted, but those pics are superb! So much to do around the NR area if you're prepared to hike, and this at a time the majority have given up for the season.

iainm, from the look of it there are still big snow patches on the Ben, but I've not been up so they may be away from the path

That looks lovely. Sadly I haven't caught the touring bug. I still like a nice lift to take me up there.

There'll be a wee story from the trip written by firsttracks in this Sunday's 'Scotland on Sunday' ski supplement, with some excellent photos taken by HighRustler.

Cracking photo that one, although it's about as far removed from the norm of Scottish skiing as could possibly be. When I look at that cornice I think Swiss 4000m peak, not the Ben!
