Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Fantastic, moffatross, I'm very jealous. I hope I'll ski something like those with you one day. I think by the time I get up there, though, you will be skiing steeper stuff than me! Very Happy
(Trouble is I'm probably not fit enough to climb the steep side of Nevis carrying skis etc unless I train a lot more than I do usually Embarassed)

DB: Re the "reverse-stem" the initially lower ski is often a bit faster starting around - especially if you use the steep technique of stamping on the upper ski to take-off. It normally lands OK, though. Madeye-Smiley

Yes I remember jumping off the uphill ski on steeps was discussed in this thread.

Ah, I missed that thread. Remy Lecluse was one of the greatest extreme skiers and was demonstrating on a super steep slope so the suggestions from one or two people about using a one or two pole plant were a bit off. It can give greater stability to the start of the turn - though I admit I haven't developed the technique. You don't just use jump turns because of difficult snow (as someone suggested) but in order not to get up any speed on the turn on a very steep slope. Remy was talking about turning on a pocket handkerchief (presumably the French version of the old "turning on a sixpence").

Thanks. HighRustler will have some more great photos from the weekend and I can't wait to see them.

snowball, you'll be overestimating my skiing skills. Being there was amazing but I was pooping bricks and could almost have got religion at the top of No. 3. Laughing

Hope we can meet up next season though. Cool

moffatross, I missed this report when you first posted, but those pics are superb! So much to do around the NR area if you're prepared to hike, and this at a time the majority have given up for the season.

iainm, from the look of it there are still big snow patches on the Ben, but I've not been up so they may be away from the path

Yep, and there's still snow left it seems for some classic lines. Yesterday, 7th June, Britain's most enthusiastic snow patch cataloguer captured this view of Observatory Gully from CMD showing that there's still 600 metres vertical skiing available from Ben Nevis summit. Tower Gully above the Scoop isn't somewhere I think I'd ever see myself skiing (a bit too much exposure for me) but there's still 500+ metres vertical below that for anyone happy enough on maximum 40 degree slopes.

I have a suspicion that there will be a few full Tower Gully descents over the coming weeks though. wink

That looks lovely. Sadly I haven't caught the touring bug. I still like a nice lift to take me up there.

For a comparison to mid summer, here a re a couple of pics from last Saturday 26th July.

I was surprised to find this patch across the path on the way up.

I think this is tower gully, second from the top?

Looking across

and down

and then the gully closest to the top, there were snow patches out of sight here.

The top.

There'll be a wee story from the trip written by firsttracks in this Sunday's 'Scotland on Sunday' ski supplement, with some excellent photos taken by HighRustler.

Cracking photo that one, although it's about as far removed from the norm of Scottish skiing as could possibly be. When I look at that cornice I think Swiss 4000m peak, not the Ben!

^ Oddly, when I think of the things that define Scottish skiing, one of them is big cornices and the mind games they play with me. They'll often intimidate me and unusually big ones like that (along with big crevasses) were fairly standard fayre last season.
