Took first born child down Paquatettes over Easter one afternoon, under the misapprehension that it would have softened up a bit.
It was butt clenchingly steep, icy mogul with the od rocks (big and small).
Curious to know just how steep. A lot of side slipping done, a couple of turns but no tele-action by either of us.
Truth be told I think I wouldn't have taken him down had I known how hard the snow was, but he was fine.

Any hint as to where it is? The name sounds familiar, but quite a few ski stations use same or similar names for slopes.

Is that the black don't the side of Santons at Val D? If so, steep and bumpy sounds about right. But prob better than old Santons.

Its at the top of Toverie back towards Tignes. Never skied it but it's meant to be quite steep

it's quite steep but very fun. think it's one of those naturtide runs which don't really get pisted so normally lots of moguls.

It's definitely steeper than Face, but much shorter and often not open

I didn't think it was that steep, but it is the big moguls that cause the problems. Certainly tiring, took me about 10 mins to get down it. There are bits of Face which are just as steep, but very short and flat so you can just scrub off the speed lower down.

sorry yes it is in Tignes under the Aeroski or whateveritiscalledno from Toviere down to Trolles. It is a naturide and I thought it was way steeper than anything on Face. I can confidently get in tele turns anywhere on Fcae but I really couldn't find it in me to do anything but 'get down' on Paquarettes. It did it some years back in reasonable curdy snow (if that isn't an oxymoron) and then again this Easter on telemark gear with my eldest son 12- also on tele gear. I had a moment or two as I thought if he slipped I'd be in serious trouble with Mrs Ed. Ice like concrete, big rocks here and there and no real stopping. When we did it there was, eventually, another pair on it.
Just curious about the actual angle.

I'm quite sceptical about the accuracy of ski tracks, but it showed 53 degrees when we did it. Sure someone will know accurately though. Steve Angus maybe?

thecramps, no way is a marked run over 50 degrees. That's Alaska heliski video porn steep. Fall on something like that and you're going to be broken; there's no way will a resort open stuff like that to holiday skiers.

I stood below it and looked up at Paquerettes as I was doing the top of Trolles and thought it looked blimmin' terrifying! Extremely steep and icy with huge moguls. Definitely on my 'blacks I'm never doing in the EK' list.
Harakiri in Mayrhofen is 78% which is 38 degrees, and I don't think Paquerettes looks quite as steep as that - but it's not far off. Certainly steeper than Face.
The guy on the video above wasn't at all happy on it, he was going down very gingerly indeed with a lot of stopping, traversing and even falling!
Grizzly looked pretty nasty too, especially the top bit.

clarky999, I did say I was sceptical. Not sure how snow trax works, does it record a median or just a momentary peak angle? and is it that accurate?
If I had been guessing I would have said 30-35 degrees, but that's a guess.

Measuring off a map blown up to 1:2500, under the Aeroski I reckon the slope averages 100m of fall in 150m horizontally - or about 34°.

do you mean the pitch under the tuffs chair? as under the aeroski are pistes or do you mean the off piste "fingers"......the only mogul field round there i can think off is under the tommeuse chair up from the folie douce........i would say that the middle section of the face is steepest piste pitch i can think off, grizzly is pretty knarly have skied it a couple of times but quite often no enough snow.... that place that you were talking about

Paquarettes is about as tricky as a piste gets, in my experience. Not even so much for the steepness as for the rocks, narrowness, irregular bumps and (when I was there) thin snow. It wasn't one I fancied a second go at.
Having said that, it was more enjoyable than the Face at 4pm on the Friday that same week when it was flat as a pancake and polished to an icy shine.

ajc2260626, DB's video is Paquarettes, it runs directly below the Aeroski. Known it existed but never worked out where the entrance was before. where is Grizzly?

ah i didn't see that link.... i have just watched it.... i have to say that i have never skied that pitch but from what i can see its similar to grizzly except maybe grizzly is a bit steeper at the top and a bit narrower overall.... the guys on the vid would appear to be picking his way down

altis, 34 degrees sounds more extreme than I remember - I thought it was less steep than that. Though it might have been less steep because I was riding from the face of one bump onto the face of another. It was certainly straightforward enough to stop and have a bit of a cry on the way down, because it was a tiring run.

nahh. Plenty steeper I'd say. Definitely: Epaule du Charvet, S, Grizzly, Paquarettes, possibly: Aiguille Percee, the last narrow bit of Sache and the narrow bit of Silence (which can be killer).
I'd say about 35 degrees is about right. I've done much steeper but with good instruction, alpine gear and plenty of warm up. Getting a twelve year old to tele down Paquarettes was really at/just past my comfort limit for parental responsibility to tell the truth I don't know how my nerves could have stood it. (although I suspect I'm just being a fusspot).

Top of the Tunnel is steeper than anywhere on Face, I think - and quite daunting.

altis, as the son of a geography teacher I am deeply ashamed I didn't do this myself, just dug out my paper IGN 1:25000 and measured under Aeroski, I'd say 90m down (9 contours crossed) in 125m (5mm) at the steepest bit which is 36 degrees (but within this there is a section where two contours are v close indeed).
