Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

The most scared I have been skiing....

....Was today. Following my daughter down a green run. She did brilliantly but I couldn't help being worried by the massive drop at the side of the run and how fast she was going.

I am so impressed by how much she has learned and improved this holiday.

Which ski resort and piste? Sounds like it could be fun for some height fearing beginners!

NickyJ, hmmm sounds like a dodgy piste rating. We have a run in Crans Montana which is rated black not because it's super steep or super technical but because it's narrow and has a fearsome drop to one side, which is v nasty in low viz (Col du Pochet for interest) - the rating should be a pretty judgemental affair, taking all factors into consideration. The arrete at aiguille du midi isn't that steep, it's just that you fall from the top of the ridge to the bottom of the valley if you screw up, giving you plenty of time, on the way down, to consider the meaning of liff.

Petite Crete in L2A. They have built up a little bank along the left hand edge it is purely me turning into a panicky mum. I remember my mum getting panicky with me and my sister when we were younger.... Now it's my turn. Embarassed

I also made absolutely sure she knew to just lead me down runs she had down with her instructor. She dutifully did just that to the extent that I ended up having to duck under a rope labelled "ski school only" to follow her. Well that was exactly what I asked of her Happy

Took my 9 year old granddaughter skiing to Kitzbuhel in March. She had 6 hours skiing at Castleford prior to going away. First morning was acomplete panic for her, and took us 45 mins to get down a 5 minute blue run. After lunch she was "dragged" down a black run (average 38 degrees angle). After 30 metres she was away and never looked back. She skied like a demon duracell bunny. She never wanted to stop and skied every thing in front of her, even wanted to chips (shuss) a few black runs, bounced back up after every fall and the bigger the fall the better. We managed to ski 135KM all week, last year me and the wife skied 146KM all week in KItz.

It was both scary and heart warming to see her ski so well and so fast.

I knew she had the ability to ski the black. Her ski technique is good and she is very good at all sport.. There was minimal risk. She also trusts me to keep her safe.

JimboS, that as well, I was desperately fighting the urge though to say "slow down", "keep away from the edge" and generally not convey the panic I was feeling. I have never felt so scared as well and that is genuine.

Otherwise you'll just go on seeing the one name:
The most scared I've been is skiing with my kids down the blue piste from the Cachette to Arpette lifts in Les Arcs - people going in both directions, fools rushing in from the SnowPark, beginners fallen all over the place, UCPA instrutors skiing backwards to impress the ladies, junctions and turnings everywhere. I have never seen more collisions and injuries in my 30 season skiing career.. I warn my clients that this the most dangerous place to ski in the whole of Paradiski.

Last Christmas when my 7 year old decided to hurtle at warp speed over the mogul section at the bottom of the Planay blue run Bisanne 1500. She disappeared around the right hand bend at the bottom whilst I was torn between keeping an eye on her and assisting Mrs J with the best route down the last section (she is very nervous on icy mogul!!). I fully anticipated finding her in a broken pile and skied down the last 200 metres as fast as I've ever skied anything but to my relief daughter was stood by Rosiere lift in one piece. She had no right to be as she went so fast beyond her ability. Lesson learned by her and me that day. Since then she has never skied anything other than responsibly and her skiing improved massively but it was scary at the time!
