Poster: A snowHead
|
Dear All,
Trying to decide on an Austrian resort to visit next season but wondered if anyone could please help with a couple of concerns.
Lech looks great but the prices of accomodation look to be sky high. I read here that some people recommended Montana but when I asked them for prices they quoted 7k for one week half board for a family of 4. Does anyone please know of a pad in Lech or Oberlech that would be less than this (quite a lot less to be honest)?
I´ve read here that ski hire is expensive there too but we can take our own stuff.
Otherwise, we thought Schladming looked good but the resort looks so low at around 700 mtrs. We´d be going early January but I´d be worried that it would be too warm to use the snow makers at this height. The guide books seem to say that it´s quite snow sure there but does anyone know if this is the case?
Thanks in advance

The Schwarzwand is a lovely hotel, right in the centre and very reasonably priced

I've also stayed in Oberstubenbach and it's cheaper and not too far too walk to town, or there's a free bus

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

costablanca blue, Last time I we contacted the tourist office and got a list of prices and accommodation providers. Nowhere in Lech is really cheap but we stayed in a really good value B&B, 'fraid I cannot remember the name now as it was a few years ago.
If you are going early january you can always wait and see where the best snow is, it is low season and last minute accommodation is easy to find. Schladming is meant to be pretty reliable for snow but just about anywhere can suffer some years, particularly early season.

Another option is the TO route, Ski Total have some chalet hotels in Lech, quite well located for lift access, and SkiWorld have a chalet or two in Zug.

for Lech think about staying in Warth (not schroken), a new lift connection opened this year joining Warth to the Lech /Zuers area. I've skied Schladming a couple of times over the years, snow in January has always been good in my view, there is something of a microclimate happening in that part of the taueran alps. My preference would be, fly to Friedrichshafen (I use Monarch), rent a car, stay in Warth and ski Lech/Zuers.

Actually as a second option dependant upon what your criteria is of course you could try;
Damuels - small village in a 100km ski area, not on the UK radar really, good intermediate runs, variety of terrain. been here twice, and was really enjoyable
Serfaus - Fiss - two villages (three if you include Landis), big ski area, lots of terrain types, again not really on the UK TO radar.
Ischgl - big ski area, glitzy village, all types of skiing going on here, I've stayed at the Goldener Adler, and Alpina most recently, always a great week, don't forget to ski Galtur just up the valley (20 min bus ride), its unbelievably quiet.

Schladming.... yeah... far too low for snow... that's what the FIS think too....
|
I must admit I would not always take FIS scheduling as a guarantee of great snow I have watched plenty of events when the race has been on a strip of artificial amongst green fields and have not watched some events because of cancellation due to poor snow though this is far rarer since the onset of artificial snow.

yep.. you are quite correct... In November 06 and 07 FIS recheduled a few events due to lack of snow. They were held at Reiteralm (part of the same 4 mountain link from Schladming).

costablanca blue, Schladming is quite far east, so temperatures will be much cooler than they might be at an equivalent height in the western Alps. I've rarely had problems skiing at Schladming in January (though 2007 wasn't great) and often had snow to the valley in early December.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

I've skied Schladming for last 6 season and I think pretty much every year my first lift served ski has been in Oct/Nov with one year in Dec. I think you're safe come Jan. Skied today to Schladming town, very last pitch is getting brown so not long left but from mid station up piste still in great shape and this is a low snowfall season.

Many thanks for all your replies - it´s much appreciated. Great to hear from everyone who knows the resorts so well, as it makes booking your hols so much easier.
We drove to the Pyrenees a couple of months ago and headed to Font Romeu. From there we visited Les Angles and Eyne thanks to a recommendation on Snowheads. We wouldn´t have thought to visit Eyne but it was a fantastic little resort which doesn´t feature in the guide books.

You know it makes sense.

costablanca blue, You could base yourself in Stuben. The year after we went to the Montana in Oberlech we stayed at the Hubesrtushof is Stuben - was almost half the price but certainly not half the hotel. OK you don't have the toboggan run right outside your hotel but dead easy to link into the St Anton circuit and only 5 mins in taxi to Zurs.
