Poster: A snowHead
|
Hi everyone.
I am looking to hire a car to go from Geeneva to La plagnes (les coches) as anything else seems more expensive. Will i need winter kitting out on the tyres? and will the car hire provide that automatically??
Cheers
Karl

How long are you planning to rent for?
When are you going?
It is possible, but unlikely that you will need snow chains this time of year. Tyres are not a problem. They will not be provided automatically
The French side is much cheaper than the Swiss side.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

karlsburg25,
Swiss side car rental usually provide winter tires and chains some operators charge, others are inclusive.

I use rentalcars.com and just booked a car for gva yesterday. Good price. Fully "winterised" included in the price and I've paid 25 Francs extra for snow chains for the week. Hardly worth taking the risk at that price.

Cheers all. Alexi can you tell me how much you paid?? and we are going from 8th april until sunday 13th. Am very wary of being overcharged or having a car minus snow chains but if not needed obviously won't get them

The snow forecast (sadly) is predicting warm temps and 0 degs at 2500 and above for the next week or so, so I cannot see you would need chains at all...

karlsburg25, make sure you return the car to the Swiss side if renting from the Swiss side at Geneva airport and return to French side if renting from French side. I think there are substantial extra charges for returning to the wrong side, even though they are based at the same airport.

karlsburg25, We are not long back and hired form this crowd http://www.auto-europe.co.uk/index.cfm? It worked about at about 210 for the week including insurance waiver cover. Not all cars had winter tyres, double check though going to Les Coches on the 8th April you would be very, very, very, very lucky if you needed snow chains.

thefatcontroller, I wouldn't recommend auto-europe, suffered from an outlandish con with one of their rental outfits, Megadrive, at Innsbruck. auto-europe seem to use dubious rental companies, they also use mainstream outfits, however, the identities of the dubious companies are hidden on the auto-europe website under the title of "local supplier" and are usually the cheapest so you do not know in whose hands your rental booking will be placed. This means you cannot check the reputation or know of the rental company beforehand. There are some very bad reviews on Megadrive and other partners of auto-europe.
I have used carhire3000, excellent service and on one occasion when I accidentally double booked, an immediate refund was made, without any admin charges. They also have a U.K. based call centre.

thefatcontroller, Have used Auto-europe quite a bit from Geneva and agree with you, I have always found them excellent, interestingly enough davidthornton, the only time I have ever had a problem with car hire was at Innsbruck, a coincidence maybe that I won't go into, I think is was with one of the major companies.
