Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Absolutely - could not agree more.

Will keep you all posted and let you know what happens after I have seen Ortho again on 27 May. What I can tell you however, is that it has been a long haul and I'm getting a bit fed up with it now. Fed up with having to depend on people, not being able to just go out and do what I enjoy because I'm limited, not able to drive my brand new car which I was so looking forward to doing (I'm into cars, so its double torture!), having to cancel my holiday to Gay Pride in Gran Canaria in May, the list goes on and on...

I am however mindful of the fact that it could have been much much worse, it can always be much worse but this is personal to me!

Will keep you all posted.

Smile

Absolutely - it has been a long time, with lots of restrictions. It was a nasty injury. I hope your next visit to the specialist shows that everything is going well. Not surprised you're getting fed up - I was only on crutches for 4 weeks following my fracture, and I was still jolly glad to be rid of them.

Going to see Ortho Surgeons tomorrow morning and hopefully now they will be able to tell me that I can fully weight bear - I really hope so, because I'm getting fed up now. To top it all, the group I was skiing with are planning and booking next year's January trip! Nothing I can do about that just now! Will let you all know how I get on tomorrow at the Ortho docs!

jb1970, I can imagine your frustration (and boredom). I was lucky in that I could work from home - if I hadn't done that I think I would have gone mad. We have a bath so I was able to get a bath board and fend fo myself after a couple of weeks...but I was so happy to have that first shower!

Getting washed with a flannel at the sink is so not the same as a nice hot/warm shower!

jb1970, certainly good luck with the visit tomorrow. And I feel for you with the shower business - when I did my knee my OH helped me into the shower for the first few days and then somehow I managed to get into the bath and keep that leg up on the window sill - it was up on the top floor and we lived in the middle of nowhere at the time.

Hi there

Went to see the Ortho Surgeon this morning - leg continues to heal, although not completely healed. He has said that I can put more weight onto my foot/leg. I asked him if this meant weight bear fully as I am partially weight bearing at the moment and he said - yes! In the consultation room, he took one of the crutches away from me to see if I could walk with only one crutch - I nearly fell over, its very difficult, so I am going to weight bear with two crutches, then will move onto one crutch (I think this is sensible). I also asked him about driving and he said I could drive short distances. All in all, I'm on the road to recovery I think!

jb1970, excellent news! yes it will be awkward at first but you'll soon get used to it. focus on trying to walk properly rather than quickly - heel strike every time. 2 crutches is a great idea - my surgeon actually advised never to use only one crutch as it affects the gait - the recommendation was to use two crutches until I was sufficiently confident to walk without any crutches. I only ever used a single crutch on an odd occasion when I was, say, walking across a room to get something, otherwise it was 2 crutches till I could walk with a proper heel strike, fully weight bear and not wobble.

Driving as well - hoorah!

Physio next....

Oh..and I meant to say that when I first started using the shower (over the bath so I had to step in) I found Suction Plastic Safety Grips - Pack of 2 from argos invaluable to give stability when getting into the shower or standing on one leg....can't seem to post a link from the iPad.

I also had a Shower stool in the bathroom also from Argos which you could put in the shower to sit on at first.

Minor inconveniences compared to what you've suffered, I meant the above more in sympathy with the length of time you've been laid up, hard to comprehend how frustrating that must be.

Just a wee quick update. As you know, when I went to see the Ortho Surgeon the other day, he said I could put more weight on my foot/leg and took one crutch away from me which was very difficult and I nearly fell over. Anyway, I went to see my Physio two days later - I didn't need to tell her what the Consultant had advised as she could see it on the computer system. Anyway, after my Physio showing me how to weight bear and walk with one crutch, it has been great and I've really got the hang of it - I've been hirplin' about all over the place! Well on the road to recovery now! I have taken a rain check with regard to driving, personally, I would like to be more or less 100% before I get behind the wheel.

Just a wee further update. I'm not due to see the Ortho Surgeons until 8 July but have been attending physio. Last week, the physio girl had me walking sideways (put my hands on the bars on the wall in the physio gym and walk sideways) - she told me to practice this at home by walking around the kitchen with my hands on the kitchen worktops. I've been doing it and doing it rather well if I say so myself. I can almost feel that I can walk normally now. I even managed to have a shower this morning on my own - still using the zimmer frame for balance and support and still having to use a shower stool inside the shower - as I'm still a bit apprehensive because its all wet and I don't want to slip and potentially injure myself which, considering I have come this far, would be suicidal! I've also been using just the one crutch and putting weight evenly throughout my legs/feet. Managed to hang out my washing today too!

Hi there - just a wee further update. Not due to see Ortho until 8 July. I was told I can go back to work as my job is predominantly a desk job. I have been told though not to sit all day but to move about for rehabilitation purposes, not during the course of my work. Not driving as yet as I don't feel comfortable doing that as yet and still using the zimmer frame to get in and out of the shower for balance and support as I don't feel comfortable walking into the shower just yet (all wet and slippy and all that).

I've been having physio which is just great - I've been walking around my kitchen using the units for support as told. When I last went to physio, she had me on the exercise bike which felt great!

So, all in all, its looking good. I'm probably going back to work mid July (just in time for the good weather!)

I thought you were in Glasgow? wink

Really glad to hear you are making progress and getting a bit more independent. It's good that you can go back to work and get back to 'normal' life soon… in the meantime perhaps you could think of all the things you are able to do now that you're usually too busy to do (books to read, languages/skills to learn etc.) and use your last bit of time off to do them!

jb1970, Also glad to hear of your prgress. Will you be on a phased return to work? Will you be ablet o get ther OK? - tip - take your crutches. If you are still needing to use the kitchen units for support then you'll probably need crutches available as you'll need to walk around in open spaces and it's a sign to others to give you a wide bewrth. Also you'll be knackered, and that's when you start walking badly and risk tripping up (I tripped over my own feet a few times but never actually fell over)!

miranda, Yes, I'm in Glasgow and, today, the weather is beautiful! lol

holidayloverxx, Yes, I will be on a phased return to work by using the leave that I didn't take last year (I had another two ski holidays and a weekend away booked before I had this accident) - so I have 18 days to use as a phased return, meaning that I still have my full 33 days of this current year (up until 31 March 2015) to use - feck I won't even hardly be at work this year! I know what you mean about the crutches - although I am walking with one crutch, I always take the other crutch with me too but I don't use it - I only use it if I feel unsteady, then I put it down on the ground for balance and to steady myself. One thing I have learned though is that the pavements (particularly in Glasgow) are really bad and certainly not good for someone with walking difficulties.

Yes, actually we were watching the football on the BBC last night and saw the forecast was for Glasgow to have a lovely day today… at a balmy 22 degrees, definitely taps aff weather - hope you get can out and enjoy it when the sun shines (I imagine crutches + dodgy paving stones aren't a good combo).

Ha ha, yes, that's why I was suggesting making the most of the remaining time you have… rehab sounds like it's going to stretch out forever and you wonder how on earth you'll fill your time… and then all of a sudden people start telling you you're fit enough to work again!

What a bummer jb 1970, dont take any notice of anyone, they are all having fun at your expense. There is a school of thought which suggests that after a break a limb is even stronger when rehab is complete. You are not a bad skier to have fallen, you were just trying harder than everyone else at the time and you can beat them all again in the future. Good luck with the rehab but do take it steady the first time you get back on the slopes, after that the worlds your oyster.

Hi folks - just a wee update. Had physio yesterday and I have now to ditch the one crutch as it is making me walk lop-sided. I've now to walk with two very short walking sticks (to get me used to walking normally again and to get me into the habit of feeling where my centre of gravity is) - I've also to start bending my knees more (put my hands on the kitchen worktops and squat down by bending my knees) - all progressing forward me thinks!
