Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

I've just had a terribly early (9h00!) appointment to get a refit to my conformable foamed liners.

I think it was the man himself (Hamish) - the immediate results feel better and he's fitted a pair of meta-tarsal domes to try and sort my forefoot cramps.

Sometimes these foamed things need tweaking as they're such a close fit apparently.

Happily impressed!!

All set for next weekend in Vd'I!!

He was mildly scathing (in a nice way Smile ) about my stiff boots, race skis, etc. advocating soft flappy fat skis and softer boots. I am not convinced! Changing the habits of 35 years will not be easy. Laughing

What's a meta-tarsal dome? I know what a meta-tarsal is (I've broken three of them), but not heard about domes.

I was sat in the corner having some Nordica Speed 10's fitted. You did indeed have Hamish dealing with you Smile

Know what you mean about the early appointment - I drove from Gatwick and was there at the door at 8:30!

boredsurfin, it may indeed be. But I reckon I'm skiing better than ever so who cares. As long as age doesn't get in the way of improvement...

rob@rar.org.uk, it's a little bit of foam shaped like a shallow dome that is about 3cm across. You put it under your metatarsal arch (of which I apparently have a high one) and it stops it collapsing. I have Superfeet cork insoles that were formed with no weight on them - the downside being that this process (as opposed to Conformable) doesn't create good support for the forefoot.

The domes rectify that - I just need to ski on them a bit and play around with positioning before they get fixed permanently.

What with domes and arches my feet are feeling like cathedrals.

How hilarious. Do we need Profeet meets now?

Cathy Coins, I did see Mr C then (didn't notice his ankles I must admit). Shame we didn't know we were all going to be there! But what Xmas jumper? I had a grey polo on and blue slobbing pants. (Confused, me). There was a chap in there with one of these Norwegian type things??

Even though we left a drinks party early last night I still needed 2 alarms, walked out the flat without ski boots, forgot what year it was when filling in the form and parked the car with the pay and display ticket in my pocket. Could have been expensive!

scottydog, as you will have gathered, I noticed not a great deal, sorry. Rather liked "Dark Summer" though. What's happened to their website?

What was interesting was the general attitude - about skiing I mean. There was a bit of a consensus that bumps, hard pack, etc. all meant go home and have lunch. Powder being the only thing worth playing with. Personally, when one isn't there all season, almost any conditions are skiable, IMHO!!

Cathy Coins, I guess not. And my understanding is that my hands, not my heels are my problem wink

JT, Exactly! Gotta ski everything. And have fun doing so!

And thinking about it, I have skied on some wide-ish skis (Sally Scramblers, Street racers, Scott somethings, etc.) and although Hamish's argument was that they make life easy, I just find them unchallenging. I quite like skiing on skis that you'll fall off if you lose concentration with a hangover.

I know, I'm weird.

It must have been a snowheads day in profeet on saturday, my wife and I were there at lunchtime getting new boots. For anybody else thinking of visiting profeet, i can't recommend it highly enough. We both left with a pair of very comfortable boots and the staff were all extremely friendly and knowledgeable. I had been a little apprehensive about the whole process but the atmosphere in the shop is great and they do everything to make sure you get a good pair of boots and enjoy the process. We even had our seven month old daughter with us and they didn't mind her rolling around the floor playing with shoes and ski boots while we were getting fitted.

Well, I have just taken my boots to Milton Keynes o try them out. £100 woth of petrol and slope time later I am gutted!

On my second run down, the discomfort had become unbearable! I bought Nordics Speedmachine 10's, and wanted the tighter fit than my heads, but not this tight!!! I wore them yesterday evening and just didnt feel right, so decided on a trip to Milton Keynes.

I know boots need to break in etc as I have been here before. I have gone from a 28.5 to a 27. I have 12mm of space at the back of the shell, so it should all be good, but on my outsides of my feet (opposite arch) a had pain straight away, and no amount of resetting (or even trying without socks to reduce volume!) worked. Then I got pain around my ankle joint, really stabbing pain, reminding me of tendonitus!

Went into Ellis Brighams just to ask for their opinion (and to consider buying some different socks) and although they felt the size was a little on the tight side, it was OK. What they did feel though was that my rear of my foot remains fairly flat and doesnt taper in straight away, and as thats where the pain started, thats what I should get looked at, as it also could prevent my foot moving back into the heel cup smoothly. Also, as I had the thinnest socks, not much more to be done there!

So, 2 hours later, sat at my desk, feet still ache! Time to see if I can make yet another trip to London Sad

I am sure Profeet will get it fixed. Thank god for a snowdome, rather than having all this on the first day in Courchevel!

and there was me convincing myself that a trip to Profeet woudl definite;ly solve the eternal painful ski boots issue. Generally it seems like they manage to help fit comfortable boots. I will be gutted if I buy boots there and find on the holiday that they are not comfortable.

Now back in two minds as to whether to go to Profeet or not.....

I've had a similar experience, I have odd shaped feet and it took me three fittings at a specialist fitter here to get it right. It sounds similar in that the fit was basically correct but there was a couple of pressure points that needed addressing.

Quite, it's disappointing of course but it's worth building in the time to test and get work done before hitting the slopes.

I'm having new ones done at the moment and it's the same story, I need to go back and get some work done. I doubt I'll be using the new ones this side of Xmas really.

A wee bit OT, anyone know of decent bootfitters in scotland? anyone had any experience of blues in the Edinburgh Tiso? I'd love to get a new pair of properly fitted boots but I really can't legislate for flying down to London for profeet or going to the other place (leamington spa? Lockwoods?) ..... particularly as you guys are backing up my feeling that you need to be able to go back for further modifications!

I've been in Blues in Edinburgh and they seem fairly thorough .....

Sorry to hear of your problems. Did you wear your boots much at home before heading to MK?

Profeet suggested that my Tecnica's (18/19mm shell gap) needed about 12/15 hours of home wear before I skied them, not just to bed the liners in but to also highlight any problems. I could only wear them for about 20 mins to start with but after a couple of weeks of home wear (including watching telly with my skis on so I could flex them properly) I got up to 3 hours with no pain & I can now wear them all day.

A 12mm gap is pretty small, certainly right at the 'race boot/performance' end of the scale as opposed to 30mm 'comfort' end. I would suggest that with that shell that you're more likely to need some additional work as the liner has nowhere to 'go' & any minor fit problems will be even more magnified.

Out of interest, at the ski show I tried the same make/model of boot as mine but one size down just to see how they felt. They had about a 12mm gap. The fit was v.good & extremely tight with the brand new liners but I could certainly feel areas of excess pressure (& the associated mega pain) that has never manifested itself in the size I own.

I'm sure that Profeet will sort you out but it make take a bit of fettling with a shell that snug.

spyderjon, yes, I wore them twice on Saturday, 1st time I managed 20 minutes, second time in the evening 10 minutes! Sunday I wore them for 10 minutes before the pain was too much, at which point I jumped in the car and went to Milton Keynes!

Hopefully Profeet will get in touch tomorrow and slot me in to get the fettling done!

I've every confidence that Profeet will sort you out. They did with me after duff experiences with S&R and EB's.

However, you need to break your boots in, well the liners really, prior to going on holiday. With custom footbeds you'll also need to get used to your feet/ankles being correctly aligned etc.

This means buying your boots well in advance & getting plenty of hours in at home to bed in the liners & check the fit. Even better if you can pull in a snowdome/dryslope trip. You've then got plenty of time for any minor adjustments to be made prior to your trip.

Many people end up needing shell modifications that are masked by the liner's initial tightness & which then only manifests itself properly after bedding in. This is not the bootfitter's fault.

scottydog, spot the pattern. I also went to Profeet and was also fitted with Nordica speedmachine 10's. Even more scary is that my old Salomons were 28.5 and the Nordics are 27 now !!!! However, to be fair, my old Salomons were more like slippers and I knew they were to big. I have been to MK a few times now to run the new babies in and its getting better each time, i could manage 45min non stop skiing on Saterday whereas in the beginning it was 10min max then i just had to get the boots off. I'm sure Profeet would be able to sort you out. Good luck

David Murdoch, It's 'cos so many people don't listen to the advice of the shop. they measure the feet, bring out the righ sized boots and the client says "it's too tight". Shop staff say "it's the right size", but in the end sell the larger size rather than lose the sale. My Pal Jutta says this happens all the time! Persevere my friend,it will come good in the end.As I recall,it took me 5 visits to a bootfitter(EB)to get mine right.First couple were fairly major blow outs rolling eyes followed by minor tweaks.Oh,and conformable footbeds in between.End result,I can put them on 1st thing, and never have to touch them all day.Longest stint to date,12 days continuous and not even a sign of a blister etc Very Happy Yes,its a lot of effort(and pain)but you only have one pair of feet;take very good care of them.

Well I have just returned from a visit. Jimmy took note of my hot-spots, went off wih the boots for 30 minutes and returned. Felt much better in the shop when I tried them on.

Got home, and put them on, didn't feel as 'comfy' (or bearable!) as they did in store! however, 10 minutes on, as I type this, they are still on, buckled up and although super-super snug, not painful.

So feel now how I thought they should - very snug/tight, so that they will fit like a glove with a little use Smile

I just want to break 30 minutes tonight!
