Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Summer skiing in Tignes or vald d

 Poster: A snowHead

Ok folks daft question but going down to France mid July, down near to Biarritz. I'm considering doing a rather long detour before the summer hols (spending 6 weeks down south) and taking in some summer skiing. I see you can do this in Tignes/val d. Plan would be drive down straight through on a Thursday ski for a few days then do a scenic trip down towards Biarittz with an overnight stop on the way. I'm very experienced at driving in France so that is not an issue, might extend the trip from the alps to the south to an extra couple of days to take in some new cities as we have the time.

Big question, what sort of slopes are open in summer? Is it only the tougher reds and the blacks? Any blues up on the glacier? I guess it won't be busy? Any suggestions of routes from the alps over to the south west?

Thanks

les 2alpes is maybe better?? (and you could ski down to the mid station at 2600 last season for a bit as the snow was so good)

I doubt Val d'Isere will be open. This is all that remained of the glacier when viewed from the south in August 2012:

No, mostly quite easy slopes. But it can be very busy with race training which takes over quite a bit of the limited area available. Good opportunity for some focussed lessons though.

Ok so as I'm a slow fraidy cat might this be good for a couple of private lessons to get me tackling reds and going a bit faster? Only been in half term and had group lessons. Instructor said my technique is good, I just lose my confidence and panic at speed/steepness. I only want to look at private lessons as I find groups a bit intimidating - wez're faster than you etc mind you I've only been in all female groups. I found them a bit .....I want to progress

Speed and fear are my big issues.

I'd also want to ski a bit with my fearless daughter who is comfortable on reds and has hit a couple of blacks.

Last year Val only opened for 3 weeks in early summer - Tignes was open into early Aug. Best thing to do is book some lessons as you do end up skiing the same slopes a few times. The Vanoise is always open so you can ski down from 3456 to 2700m - early season you can often get back to Val Claret.
