Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Ski bindings - Brake broken off

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi

Was in the park earlier today and as I landed my ski came off and when I got hold of the ski I noticed the brake had snapped off my bindings and made a deep gouge into the base of my ski.

See below for the damage!!

My question is...if I get it serviced to sort that gouge out, are these okay to ski on still without the brake? It's just I'm in Chamonix for another 6 weeks and I'm going to order some new bindings, but don't want to miss out on any days skiing.

Any advice is welcome.

srogers13, Ouch, poor ski! Hope you weren't similarly damaged.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Megamum, nope I was fine. I landed the 360 initially and then my ski came off on impact, which is why I'm so confused my ski is damaged!

srogers13, It's very dangerous to ski without a brake (or leash) as the ski could fly off down the hill and hurt someone. It looks to me like you have knackered the binding as well. Bad luck. The ski has taken a knock as well.
Ask at the shop they might be able to help, there is often s/h stuff about.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Got insurance so replacement and fitting is all covered. Just wanted to know if it'd be alright to ski on tomorrow - will obviously take it easy so ski is less likely to pop and fly off.

srogers13, It's NOT ok to ski them tomorrow! Do NOT ski them. Apart from the injury risk to bystanders from a runaway ski (for which you would be personally liable as you're knowingly skiing an unsafe binding) there's the fact that without the brake in place there's a lot more vertical 'room' in the heel & the binding will not function properly. The NX/Axium binding is very common & loads of shops in Cham will have them so the binding could be replaced in a matter of minutes using the same mounting holes.

+1

Not safe at all, no matter how easy you take it. Get it fixed before you head up the hill

No problem, thanks for letting me know! I'll get it fixed tomorrow. Think I'm going to invest in some better bindings though, either the Marker Jester 16's or the Salomon Z12's. Both have good reviews, with the former focused more on freestyle but still goes well across the mountain.
