Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Good resort close to Salzburg with decent après

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Looking to book next years family trip and would go back to kappl in a heartbeat but flights to Innsbruck are anticipated to be £350 each from Edinburgh so it kinda rules that out. We can get some reasonably priced flights to Salzburg and would love to do saalbach some justice but prices are quite steep.

As an example the gasthof in kappl is slope side has great food and all for €50 a night db&b. Equivalent places in saalbach are €100 a night.

We are taking my eldests friend with us too so it means that we need to fly from either Glasgow or Edinburgh as we no longer have the 7 seater car.

Looking for somewhere within say 90 mins from salzburg that has decent après, ideally a fun park or two for the kids and ideally hotel or gasthof close to lifts/slopes.

Thanks in advance.

PS Self catering or b&b not an option we want to explore.

boabski, I paid 68 Euro Half board over Christmas/New Year here - http://www.gasthof-rosner.at/home.html

That included a 4 course evening meal and the specials on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve. The food is excellent and the guests's dining room is non-smoking. Stayed there again at the beginning of February and will be doing another 3 weeks there next year - the reservations were made as I paid this year's bills.

Same price all season actually. Bus stops right outside, although with a car you really can explore all of the Salzburger Sportwelt Amadé region. Right in the middle of the town with big rooms for doubles and family rooms.

boabski, For Saalbach accommodation, use the booking service on www.Saalbach.com. Put in your requirements and you should be able to find something affordable. Slopeside accommodation that Snowheads have used and liked include the Berger Sport, Konig, Norika, Gappmeyer and the Enzian. See the long Saalbach thread > http://www.snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?t=104841

For the Saalbach-Hinterglemm Ski Circus, you could also look at Leogang as the entry point. Far quieter than the two others and less expensive, but with access to the same 200 km area. Leogang also has the best fun park in the circus, as well as a videoed and timed slalom run and a speed gun.

Other suggestions: Maria Alm, Lofer, Fieberbrunn, Ski Amade in general - all an easy drive or transfer from Salzburg.

Nah, that's the one in the valley in Leogang. The park at the top, on your right as you arrive from Saalbach above the Asitz Brau, was fully functioning at the weekend.

boabski, when are you looking to book for? There are a lot of repeat customers like myself (and Queen Bodecia) who book up for the same week the following year as we pay for the current trip. I know Christmas and New Year are pretty tight now in terms of bookings.

Bad Gastein? Salzburg around 100k, take the train? Some great apres to be had at the Silver Bullet if you like live bands. Some fantastic classic mountain restaurants that will not kill the budget but will kill off hunger! But if you're worried about your budget then don't go to the Casino! Especially after the S/B!

Heading there 10th jan. Have been to bad gastein before. Thought it was good but not sure if I would rush back. That was over 20 years ago so things have probably changed.

boabski, That is nearly always low season so I don't see it being full. The Eastern Europeans will have finished their Chrimble/New Year as well.

The only possible reason for being full is that the Ladies World Cup circus hits Altenmarkt/Zauchensee around then with all the fans piling into town for the speed events on Saturday and Sunday. The slalom is at Flachau on the following Tuesday and is an amazing evening.

boabski, Gastein's changed a heck of a lot in the 8 years i've had an apartment there so i'm guessing it's better now than 20 years ago. Even in the last 5 years, they've upgraded the lifts, much more apres etc. etc

Cheers
Kersh

Kersh, it was my first ski holiday so probably would view it differently now. Do remember the amazing wellness which I think has been made even better now. Spent most of our days at sport gastein. My brother in laws idea of après was a wee post ski snooze Shocked

I'm liking to the look if zauchensee. Remember seeing the FIS women's downhill and thinking what an amazing course (especially the start). Is zauchensee quite expensive for accommodation?
We prefer to stay as close to slopes/lifts as possible and can't really be bothered with buses to slopes etc. I'm guessing you need to use the bus a lot from altenmarkt?
We will not be taking a car
Any more advice on the area would be welcomed.
Thanks in advance.

Zauchensee is a nice area, and links to FlachauWinkl, think you would need a bus to get from there to the main area at Flachau, although it would be a 5 minute ride at most.
Penty of Hotels in Zauchensee, all ski in ski out. Not sure on prices. If you were in Altenmark you would need to get a bus down the valley to Zauchensee, not a problem. 10 minute ride.
I stayed in Radstadt and would take the gondala up from there and ski down to Altenmark and get the bus to Zauchensee, no problems at all.
Flachau is the areas biggest resort. With the ski area linking to Wagrain and onto Alpendorf, about 120km runs in that area.

Had a look at this place. Looks like an 'upmarket' youth hostel but price is decent. Anyone have experience of Akitives-Reisen?
DRHOSKING, of those villages, which has the best après as we do like a wee boogy with our ski boots on?
ColP, Have been to Maria Alm one day in the summer. Beautiful village but skiing looked a wee but limited at village. We do not like getting buses every where

Can't decide between schladming and zauchensee. Both similar prices but zauchensee hotel 50m from slopes, schladming not so close.

You (and other expats e.g. Waynos) going to around next weekend as I'm planning to come over? Would be up for a bit of ski touring too - even if it's only side of the piste stuff as I need to get fit for a couple of ski touring trips that are coming up late March / early Feb.

Thanks for all the advice folks. Looks like we will be going to Kuthai. Travel agent priced us for week there and from what I can see, the hotel reviews are excellent. Realise its not exactly après heaven but ticks loads of our boxes and pretty decent value too.
