Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Advice - best snow near(isn) to Munich 10th March

 Poster: A snowHead

Hi,

We've got a weekend in Munich planned and then 5 days to head to the Alps. We'll be driving out of Munich on the Monday morning. Rather baffled by the choice of resorts.

Where should we head? The snow forecast suggest that Ischgl will have the most new snow. Can it be that simple?

I'm an OK skier - I'm happy doing a few black runs each day so long as I'm doing some more relaxing stuff too. My wife is a pro, but seems happiest on the wide gentle runs.

Thanks in advance!

Charles

Ischgl should be a good bet re snow as it has a season that lasts into May on it's upper mountain, but it's one of the priciest places in Austria for accommodation & liftpasses, etc. and is a longer drive than most from Munich.

This is a brilliant resource for comparing ski resorts...I hope it doesn't make it even more confusing...

Closer to Munich and cheaper is the impressively large SkiWelt area based on the villages of Soll, Scheffau, Ellmau, etc

Or maybe one of the bases in the Ski Amade region south of Salzburg like St Johann-Alpendorf, Wagrain or Flachau

clevy, if you want the best snow then wait till the day before or a couple of days before at the earliest then book somehting then. Either check here or wepowder.com for the snowforecast for the next week then use that to choose where to go.

As it's now only a week away and everywhere has pretty decent cover, I'd say that the Ziller Valley (Zillertal in German) would fit the bill. Loads of ski areas (about 500km of piste on the lift pass IIRC); accommodation fairly easy to come by (Hotels.com, Booking.com etc - or via tourist office websites online) - Mayrhofen is the main valley town; some fairly high skiing; and there's Hintertux Glacier for a guarantee of good snow.

We've skied the whole valley at the end of March and had great snow at altitude.

It's under 2 hours drive to the start of the valley from Munich Airport - all on easy motorway.

We were at St Johann iT in February, just past the SkiWelt. The conditions on the lower slopes were very bad, especially in the afternoon. We ended up going up to the Steinplatte area at Waidring which is a bit higher- all above 1100m. The snow was very good.
It straddles the German- austrian border and is accessible from Reit am Winkl on the German side (1hr 15 from Munich according to Google maps).
Its mainly a nice easy plateau with a few more challenging runs on either side. The main bowl can get quite busy, but its possible to find a run (and lift!) all to yourself away from there. Our favourite run was blue 17/red 19 on the german side. Mainly because it was so beautiful.

With this warm weather somewhere high up would be best
