Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

ski edge tool beginner Q's

I'm planning on taking my Atomic's for their first tune before the EoSB. I live in Putney, so the closest place seems to be http://www.47degrees.com/in-store-services/ski-snowboard-repair.aspx

I've done a little research on angles and it seems that all Atomics come with a 3 degree edge, and I'd like to keep this. I've also read shops often just grind everything to 2 degrees to save re-calibrating equipment.

So, assuming I get them back with a 2 degree edge. Equipment do I need to tune them myself?

Will this do the job? "Kunzmann Edge Trick Tool c/w Alu-oxide & Diamond Stones" http://www.jonsskituning.co.uk/

The edge trick is really just for the occasional tweak and not suitable for changing an edge setting where you would use a b*stard file, or at least something medium-rough. If your skis are not heavily used you could use an edge trick for the minor touch-up you need each year.

Ask the shop to keep them at 3 (87) and if they say no, don't use them.

Or, buy a guide and file.

I've bought stuff from 47 deg, and they seem switched on, but let them know what you want. If by any chance someone machines the angle to 2 deg in the future, might be best just to leave it be, as it won't make that much difference.

dangerMouse!, Fraser who runs the workshop at 47 Degrees is a good guy & will know to keep your angles at 3 but as beequin says it won't hurt to specify it.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

thanks, I emailed them earlier and Fraser has just replied saying he can do any edge I like (not sure the article I read about commercial shops machining everything to 2 deg's was very accurate).

would you still recommend the edge trick as a good tool to keep the edge sharp? - should I get anything else while I'm at it?

If your going to have your skis shop serviced then the Edge Trick is ideal for in-resort fettling. Get the one with both an alu-oxide stone & a diamond file & use the alu-oxide stone in it first to remove rock dings/ski burrs & then use the diamond file in it to touch up the side edge but always wet the diamond file (water, snow, spit, beer but not oil).
