Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Yeah, I was looking for that too, guess it was deleted due to some of the comments? Read it briefly earlier but wanted another read through, were a couple of posts I wanted to reply to IIRC in light of info I got in resort today.

fatbob, I'm guessing, but presumably as it was a searcheable thread discussing the death of a GB skier the mods/admin have removed it from view whilst they consider how to address a certain post it in it which was heavily criticised....

Previous thread has been temporarily pulled.

The Daily Fail has an article on the sad death here

They seem to suggest that the death was primarily caused by a lack of a helmet. From what I have read, I doubt that a helmet would have made a great deal of difference Confused

Real shame for the friends and family left behind. Sad

Hmm 130 ft slide for life plus 43 ft travel in air colliding 10 ft up a fixed object....if reported correctly that'd a hell of a velocity and blunt force trauma regardless of safety gear.

Yes, well I can still sympathise with writing something down that you know is going to end badly, staring at it in the preview box for 5 minutes, and then pressing Submit anyway. Maybe he's a terribly depressed nihilist crying for help, howling into the infinite darkness, desperate for attention and love. Maybe he's just a fan of eugenics. We'll probably never know.

In any case, the post was substantially not terribly different to every year when the Darwin awards go round, and everyone goes 'LOL, what a pillock, diving into that cement mixer! It's probably best that he's not able to breed any more LOL!" or whatever.

Like fatbob says it was apparently on the Fang run as it met the blue, which at high speed can be tricky to manage. Very sad.

I can only imagine the thread was cut because of the stunningly crass post this morning, which sadly said far more about the person posting than the content of the post itself.

I hate threads on deaths. Had a situation with a friend who died riding a horse in a competition. His mother was on a flight from the UK to New Zeland. She found out about her sons death via facebook, social media and news sites whilst on the plane!! can you imagine her pain waiting for the plane to land, and then the flight back to the UK!!

THINK PEOPLE!!

RIP to the skier and thoughts to the family

I agree. I saw the post as it happened and, although it was delivered in a brutal fashion and although I went "ouch" because of the circumstances, I can't help feeling he was partly saying what some people might have been thinking so why not get it out in the open? From the reports it sounds like the guy must have been skiing somewhat outside his operational envelope and therefore a danger to himself (clearly) and others. The immovable object he hit after an implausibly accurate 43 feet of flight could have been you or your kid. Then how would the debate play out? Whatever, these incidents are always tragic.

By the way, the Daily Mail's obsession with his helmetlessness is absurd given the physics.

Unless I am missing something, how can you make this comment from this report?? How do you know he was skiing beyond his ability. No matter how well we all ski, and no matter how well we adjust our technique to the conditions, we all fall at some point.

Now I hadn't fallen for years, but the last time I did, I fell racing and woke up in hospital, requiring 2 operations.

Now the reports say he slid 130ft after losing control. Given how steep and icy some blacks can be, it is entirely conceivable the poor guy was skiing well before his fall.

It is for none of us to comment on his ability either way.

I'd also like to note, I didn't see any comments of ''Im glad Schumacher is in hospital, because he could have hit my child''!! So why this poor guy?? Schumacher is a good skier too, yet he had a fall and was lucky!!

Bode Swiller, no offence, but it's almost certainly too early to make any judgement about the detail of what happened. There will undoubtedly be an investigation and at that point it may become clearer.

The post (this morning) came across as ill considered, certainly ill informed and unnecessarily (deliberately) hurtful. I cannot think of any circumstances where it would have any merit.

Hmm
  1. If you hate threads on death, perhaps this is not the best place to be.
  2. If you don't want to hear news, some of which may be bad, then probably not using social media or other news channels would be the best approach. Shouting at people to "think" probably will not tackle this issue.

hmm any of us can die in circumstances that might make the news, and no one can control social media commentary etc etc. It's not the 1980s anymore, one of the benefits of universal comms is also a weakness in that idiots and trolls are only 1 degree removed.

Elise Christie discovered the downside of Twitter is that the population of Korea can sledge you. My view is that if you choose to put yourself out there or go looking you need to ensure you've got a bit if a thick skin.

^^^ I agree (to a degree - I don't condone the threats she received) with regards to social media and those who put themselves out there you do need a thick skin, however common decency must prevail in situations like this.

I'm one of those people who have laughed at the Darwin awards, so possibly I am a hypocrite because I responded negatively to the Altis comment this morning.

On the other hand, I have to agree with philwig,

PaulC1984, Well, sliding for 130 ft and then flying for 43 usually indicates that the speed and technique weren't adjusted to conditions. The initial speed has to be very high if loss of control lead to this kind of accident. He probably was skiing "well" but it's not an indicator of speed. Even good skiers need to slow down unless they are on a race course.

I see the comments on the Daily Mail page above have now descended into a helmet debate. The comment was crass but what if the snow cannon had been another person. I can see where Altis was coming from; he was perhaps guilty being too honest by typing his real feelings.

In La Clusaz about a year ago we were watching some skiers from the bubble on the way up. There was nobody notably 'out of control' or hotdogging, just a bunch of skiers. One of them fell, and slid the entire of the remainder of the (steep, red) piste, totally unable to self-arrest. Thankfully he landed in a natural little basin at the bottom, rather than plunging off a cliff.

Any attempt to causally link a fatal accident to irresponsibility, without knowing any of the events leading up to the outcome, is idiotic.
