Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

What do you think? The message board wont be the same as it used to be but is it still worth it? I have birthday money which I was going to use on that before they made there 'changes'! Is it still worth using my money or shall I find something else to do with it?! Smile

If you must join, join in resort. You get 2 years for the price of one. Well, you did, last time I heard. Of course this facility, like others, may be withdrawn, without notice, at any time snowHead

Clare, have a look a bit further down the list of threads and there's one quite similar. Some of the answers there might help make the decision.

Basically, the ski club forums were free, so the benefits of joining and parting with cash are still the same.

Clare if you use the ski slope in sheffield you can recoup the cost of your membership in 3 or 4 visits (2 hours for the price of one for ski club members) but I would check with the club and the ski slope first. I often found that the staff at sheffield did not know of the arrangement and had to check with another member of staff

I still think it is worth it. The message board isn't the be and end all of the SCGB.

I've had a couple of good club holidays and they bring in excellent instructors on their teaching ones. Their season start up in Tignes last Dec was intensive instruction 9.00-4.00pm for 6 days. Tiring, but excellent. (ok, some of the others on the holiday can be a bit odd, but mostly they're ok). I use the discount whenever I can (and sometimes get it when I shouldn't!). Also, the resort reps save you paying for a guide or fumbling you way round when you don't know the area.

Would you still say it was a good idea for an under 24 membership (I'm only 15) would my family be able to make use of the discouts if I was the member?

Often when hiring gear in a ski shop if the person paying is a member then the discount would be across the board. I guess this wouldn't work if your parents were paying by credit card etc and only you were the member.

I guess at SSV only you would get the discount - not much use if your family ski with you there.

Why not give your parents the amount for your under-24 membership (is it 15 pounds?) and then get them to pay the difference for a family membership (i think 67 pounds - so 42 difference). Then you'd all get the discounts. If you get them to set up a direct debit they'll probably forget to ask you for your 15 pounds next year as well!! Wink

if you do convince your family to join, spend your £15 (£15.99 acually) on the "Which good ski and snowboard guide" which includes a voucher to gain half price SCGB membership (family membership=£34.50).

I got two (overpriced at £99 but good) Snow & Rock gear bags for the price of one and about £200 off next years hol, for a £70 investment.

Who cares about reps, balls and social ex/inclusivity? Bring on the discounts.

Clare, if you want to join purely for the forum than it probably isn't worth it.

But the SCGB is much more than that. From a purely commercial point of view you'll easily get your money back on discounts (holidays from most major operators), equipment, ski hire, ski school, etc.

There are also specialist Ski Club holidays, including off-piste instruction, under 20s, etc. And the reps (OK I'm biased as I am one) - great if you're in a resort on your own, or your friends are not of the same standard.

Plus the magazine and all the other information on the website.

As mentioned previously, you'll probably get 2 seasons for 1 if you join in a resort; of course you have to balance that against any discount you get have got on booking your holiday.

As a SCGB mamber I hope you do decide to join.

Claire as a new member i would say join the discounts would obviously come in handy if say you bought all your families kit with thier money if you catch my drift ok the forum isnt what it used to be but still very imformative and the other members are great. The magazines are good too so what are you waiting for get on over and join.

Don't get me started on the "Discounts" - fine for the big retail chains, but they are very costly for the smaller shops. But, if you think SnR saturday staff are as good as the guy who runs a small shop, skis at the end of each season, and employs skiers, not salesmen, then be my guest.

As for the holidays - I'm sure they are good if you want to go to a resort that has a SCGB rep. Personally, I like going places where I'm not one of a crowd of Brits on tour

Wear The Fox Hat, there are 19 touring holidays, including the famous Haute Route, on the menu for this season.

Personally, the mathematics work out for the two of us that it's worth joining: 'family' membership (you can be a couple living at the same address) - £70 for the two of us. This gives us at least 5% off each ski holiday we book, if we book through Ski Solutions. As we go twice a year, not independently, and a European hol would cost about £4-500 each, Canadian one £700 each, for my outlay of £35 I save £60 - a net profit of £25 Very Happy . Then you get 10% off car parking at the airport & various discounts at ski shops & the magazine, that is nice to look through and reassure myself I will never ski down those slopes Skullie

In purely financial terms it works for us, but may not for everyone snowHead

One of the main reasons that I was drawn back to the SCGB website was the forum. Can anyone update us on what is happening there now.

e.g. How many contributors are there, are the discussions similar to here, what's new, is there anything they have that we don't etc etc?

Not sure where you get your ideas on Club holidays from. I've booked with the Club for a touring holday for which the nearest resort is Andermatt - no rep there ( I think this link is available to all). I remember there is a St Anton holiday in the book, too. Again no rep there. Probably others - I haven't specifcally hunted.

The discussions at SCGB are nowhere near as flowing and some of them are very lawyerish/point of order.

Overall I'd say the ski club is worth joining, primarily for the insurance, which is very good and you also get the Good ski guide free on-line.

I believe the holidays are very good but with a price tag to match.

There does seem to be an air of elitism but it varies and a lot people are trying to lose that tag. I met the Rep manager and he was very much a straight forward/normal guy who was just very keen on skiing.

Greetings Ubrain. Is it still worth joining the SCGB?
Clare, if you make sure you make use of the discounts, then Yes. I have never used the Rep service (essentially ski guides), but many club members say it is the main reason they are members. The magazine is OK. And you can get 5 days of snow/weather forecast rather than the pleb's three.
Ray Zorro, is it worth joining for the forum? No. And that is from a keen ski club forum poster. snowHeads fizzes with facts, fun, frolic and smilies. The ski club "chatroom" is rather quiet in comparison.
