Poster: A snowHead

Does anyone know when the links from Val Thorens across to Meribel and the rest of the 3 Valleys open? Is it snow dependent or the same date every year? We are going to VT on 10 December and thinking about what pass to buy. Any advice / info would be really appreciated.

SkiBod, I haven't stayed in VT, but have been to Meribel. Be sure to buy the full 3V pass.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I'd take a late decision. These sorts of links are never guaranteed, though I guess the lift company would change the pass and refund if they can't deliver the link.

SkiBod - we have been 1st and 2nd week of December - and the link has never been open. The last time snow conditions were excellent but the link still wasnt open. Think it usually opens the week before Christmas - but your best bet is to try the tourist office.

kevsmith, Excellent! Just in time! Is the link definitely open then, or just the resort and we'd need to get across by bus or something, do you know?

I'd agree with David Goldsmith on this one.
Never can be too sure how the snow will build in Dec. Wait till you're sure it's going to be worth it.
Anyway there's little to worry about, Val-T is a wikid area in itself. I've bought a 3V pass before and barely bothered to get out of that valley.
If Meribel itself is open, the link will be (except in v.high winds). VT to Meribel by bus has got to be 90 minutes each way Definitely ski it... and don't miss the last lift back!!!

SkiBod, the opening of the link will occur sometime on or after 10th December - snow conditions will dictate precisely when. I don't think the link was open as early as 10 December last year, but I think the snow is looking better this year, at least in VT.
Meribel is a long way away by bus, and I doubt it would be worth the journey.
I would wait until you get here before deciding which pass to buy.
Have a good trip

Thanks very much for the comments. If we buy a VT only pass and then want to get a 3V pass for a day or so (if conditions are favourable), can you just pay a 'top up' for the existing pass, taking into account that you have already paid the VT rate, or do you have to buy a full 3V day pass from scratch, does anyone know?

The rates are here http://www.valthorens.com/download/rates-setam.pdf. I'd go for the Belleville or the VT pass and upgrade on a day basis if/when they open the link.
One minor thing - if the weather looks like it is going to close in, check with the lifties as they may close the link. Be prepared to haul it back to VT sharpish as the journey back from Meribel to VT by bus/taxi is going to be either long or expensive or both. Other than that, its all good.

Thanks for the link ~ am I reading this right?
It would be 122.50 Euro for 6 day VT, 142.00 Euro for 6 day 3V. And 28.50 Euro for a one day 3V pass.
So, actually cheaper to just go for the 3V pass for the whole time?
Once I start buying odd days rather than 6 days' pass in one go, you lose quite a big discount. or am I missing something? Sorry if I am being really thick about this!

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

SkiBod, looking at the lift pass rates there's no figure quoted for a daily extension from a VT to 3V pass for the week starting 10th Dec, which is a bit odd considering that they do quote rates for the 3V pass for that week. For subsequent weeks the extension rate is €20.50 per day. I would suggest that if the links are open, the 3V pass will be the one to get. I'll post an update as soon as I hear a date for the opening of the links.

For the sake of 20 euros/13 quid just buy the 3V pass and stop worrying!

Alastair - thanks for that!
xyzpaul - agreed, but that will be £26 for us that I'd rather spend on beer if the links aren't open
