Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

..... this afternoon. GB children's champs start tomorrow in Méribel with the slalom first thing Sunday morning, the GS on Monday (though pretty poor conditions are forecast), then a short break back home before going to Val for an international race on Tuesday and if qualified for the finals (very tough selection), perhaps Wednesday.

Wish us luck!

PG, good luck. Smile Is it just the kids that race, or do you indulge as well?
Tell us the results, whatever they are.

I could try to enter (the children's champs) but somehow I don't think I'd get away with it! I wouldn't get past the qualifiers anyway. No, just bringing moral support, sticking plasters, tuning, waxing and carrying the 5 pairs of skis for 1 kid, chauffeuring, encouraging, commiserating, and generally being on the receiving end of the foul mood she's in for 24 hours prior to the race, which is nothing compared to the race days themselves....
(which is partly why I said I'd yet to go on a skiing holiday in another thread... Confused )

In general the only 'races' I've ever done are the flèche GS time trials (got my 'vermeil' - just under gold). Started skiing too late in life to get into the race scene myself...

Considering it had rained up to 2200m yesterday, well above Mottaret, they'd done a good job getting the Meribel centre slalom stadium skiable. A bit brown in places! But on the whole it went off pretty well. Slalom today, two runs two separate races... GS tomorrow. Minor mishap in the first run! But she won the second so she's pretty happy...

It was definitely a bit cooler today. A decent snowfall promised above 1500m tomorrow morning early - much needed by all the Savoie resorts, but the Championship GS won't be much fun!

Elizabeth B, The GB system is rather strange... each leg counts as a completely separate race, and they also have a combined time which decides an overall title (which is all that is mentioned on the Ski Club site - it only tells a small part of the story, there were actually 3 prizegivings in all...) The full details showing the winners of race 1 & 2 are at www.britski.org (race 2 specifically is at http://www.britski.org/chsl2res.pdf ). Although they mix up the Children 1 (born 89 & 90) and Children 2 (91 & 92) in the results, they are actually classified separately.

Jonpim, Not bad today, she fell badly just a gate from the end of race 1 when she was really flying. Got up climbed back up to the gate, and finished, but easily lost 12 seconds. Still she came second in race 2 of the GS so overall it wasn't a bad couple of days despite the appalling conditions - this morning in particular, it was absolutely chucking it down with rain at 7am and the start was put back several times. Problem with Méribel is that it's too low altitude for championship racing in April, at just 1400m. It had rained up to 1800m so ironically numerous buckets of salt had to put on the course in an attempt to harden up the snow a little. Bit of a farce really - lucky there weren't more injuries, as time went on the course was almost unskiable....)

PG, very impressed with your daughter's spirit. I think she must be about 12 (similar age to H Steggles and L Russell-Henry), and she shrugged of her disastrous first race to come runner up in the second. Wow! Inspiring! Well done. Smile

Jonpim, Hannah's 11 for another six months, and as a 92 will still be a "Children 1" next year when the girls you mentioned move up. For younger children a year or two makes a big difference - in terms of physique (strength) but particularly weight. For girls the advantage has more or less gone by the time they reach 17.

Hannah and Louisa (Russell-Henry) are good pals, have skied together a lot. If you ever need a guide for the Vallée Blanche, her dad Philippe is the man! High mountain guide, based in Les Houches, fluent English....

PS sorry about the negative vibes ref weather again!

PG, no worries about those negative waves. Now Ian H is Lord High Postie Master I am confident there will be chains on the bus that takes me up to Val T on Friday. I just wish I could have been there cheering Hannah on, rain or no rain. Rosie has alread texted me that it was so warm this afternoon she shed her ski jacket , and was skiing in her Marilyn Manson "hoody".
