Poster: A snowHead
|
I'm thinking of taking my 7 year old daughter skiing next year. If I do, it will be her first time. She's the kind of girl who'll love it forever if it goes well and never ski again if it doesn't. No pressure then With that in mind, is there anywhere that is particularly good/ bad? Do certain countries have reputations?
Also, with ski school, is it somewhere I can just leave her without having to be there? I'd kinda like to do some skiing on my own, without having to be tethered within a run or two of the nursery slopes.
Many thanks, Nick.

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

Yes, you generally leave the children in the care of the instructor, and then meet them again afterwards.
I've had very good experiences with Magic in Motion, but all resorts will have at least one good school, so I wouldn't worry about that. Once you've chosen a resort, I'm sure you'll be able to get specific recommendations.
I'd also think about getting them some lessons here over the summer, as they'll enjoy it a lot more in the mountains if they've already mastered the basics.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

faithsdaddy, how social is your daughter? My 7 yr old love being with children her own age, so we like going with a Esprit and we are trying Mark Warner this season, as they have kids clubs which lets her play with the same children before and after skiing which she loves.

+ 1 for Esprit. If you don't fancy a child friendly operator and doing it on your own - we have used New Generation ski school a few times and found their kids lessons to be very good.

faithsdaddy, depends if you just want a two hour or so window to ski on your own in which case you only need to think about finding a good ski school or if you want a longer period on your own in which case you might want to consider a family operator where they will provide extra childcare. SHs can come up with recommendations for both options if you have a preference

My recommendation was based on what my daughter prefers - which is time playing with children her own age, so although may not NEED additional childcare, my daughter enjoys the social aspect and being with children in the lesson who she also gets to socialize with outside the lesson.

Hey guys and girls, thanks for your responses.
Kieranm- Big fan of learning on dry slopes, plus the one at Aldershot is close by. My concern would be that she talks herself out of it, but once she's 'out there', she'll be ok.
NickyJ- She's very social. Isn't Mark Warner big bucks? I guess I should have said that upfront- I'm just a humble postie, so $$$$$ ski holiday's are out of the question. More like $ or $$ She would love the playing before/ after thing though.

faithsdaddy, when we booked our April holiday with them they had the second school holiday week priced as a low season holiday (they did up the price later probably when they twigged it was a school holiday week). Is it just the two of you? In which case You may get a last minute deal? Also are you looking inside or outside school holidays as that makes a massive difference in price?

NickyJ, no problem at all with your recommendation Just trying to work out if faithsdaddy was just looking for a ski school or wanted the whole package thing.

Well then have a look at http://www.snowbizz.co.uk/ More modest accommodation that Mark Warner or Esprit but fantastic on the slopes location and superb ski school (their own) and childcare/Kiddie club activities. Small company, really personal service. Can't recommend them highly enough.

NickyJ- Definitely outside school holidays and SUPER DOOPER last minute. I've just priced up Neiderau/ hotel Sonnschein as a last minute dooley for £1200 all in Vs nearer £2600 if you pay the brochure price
I'm not really all that at sorting out cheap skiing. Got our last one down by £450, but it took me loads of nervous phone calls to do it.

For 1 adult 1 child, Mark Warner gas Les Deux Alpes for second week of Easter school hols, for £1382. That is flights, accomodation, transfer on a catered chalet basis.
Esprit are offer 1 audit & 1 child for that same week for £999 in Les Arc 2000.

If you're near Aldershot for dry slope, don't forget that there's also a dry slope in Guildford, Christ's College Ski Club. Ok, I have a vested interest in that I teach there, but I don't recall teaching any children who were put off by learning on a dry slope. I know I've definitely taught kids who didn't want to be there initially and ended up enjoying it!
If you're looking for family orientated ski holidays, Simon Butler Skiing is another one to consider, as they include tuition in the holiday price. Might be a bit pricey, though.
