Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Have you ever had a heart attack when shovelling snow?

Lots of Americans do.

The onset of winter is apparently accompanied by people vigorously shifting snow from their front and back yards and dropping dead before they've had a chance to open the garage, enjoy the fruits of their labour, and drive away.

Perhaps shoveling snow is the most energetic thing that Americans ever do [no offence intended to US snowHeads - do you expend more energy having sex?].

Whatever. Anyone shovelling snow should read this article to avoid heart attacks, published by from Keloland TV. ["First TV station in South Dakota", est. 1953]

I have also heard that it is bad to exert oneself (e.g. go for a run) when the temperature gets a bit below zero due to the increased risk of heart attack? A fit friend of mine had a heart attack in New York when going for a run in sub-zero temperatures early one morning during winter (WHY rolling eyes ) ... the doctors told him that the low temperatures had significantly increased his risk of heart attack when exerting himself - something he would not normally have been at risk from? How much more so for an unfit person shovelling snow ...

Is there any evidence of people having heart attacks skiing? Having worn a heart rate monitor last year skiing to see the effect for myself, skiing certainly didn't raise my heart rate by much more than medium paced walking does.

If I have a heart attack shoveling snow it will be from mental stress not physical stress. With the local ski hills so close a big dump in town usually coincides bigger dump on the local mountain. Its stressful knowing that the longer you take clearing your sidewalks the further back in line you will be when they start the lifts.

It probably depends a bit on the duration of the exertion. wink

i think this study finally proves beyond doubt that a diet comprised solely of krspy kreme do-nuts may possibly, perhaps in certain circumstances, not be agreeable with sudden bouts of extreme execise ...

I really think this is aimed at people who get out of breath walking up a few stairs. This is a prime warning sign that you are unfit possibly somehting more serious & probably should not do ANY strenuous exercise at all.

Surely this only applies to the clinically obese or chronically decrepit. How many snowHeads fit these catagories?

Many elderly people experience strokes and heart attacks when standing at bus-stops in the cold. All to do with blood thickening due to the temperature. If you wrap up warmly, it reduces the risk.
