Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Machine or hand ski wax at S&R?

Is it worth paying the extra £5 for Snow & Rock to hand wax rather than machine wax my skis? Does it make a difference?

Yes and no.
It's is worth an extra fiver for hand waxing, but I've just serviced by hand three pairs of skis on the balcony in less than an hour.

jbob has it right! My 10yo next week has spent the afternoon learning how to hand service her skis. Quick and easy once you have learnt how from Spyderjon!

There is that, but I'm more than happy to pay £5 for a good placebo effect Smile

jbob, that doesn't take into account how prone to disaster I am when doing that kind of thing!

finestgreen, I have a friend who who refers to the gazebo effect, I haven't corrected him as I find it so funny.

Not sure what S&R do but if you get yours skis waxed in resort "cheaply" you often get effectively a cold wax - so the machine puts a layer of wax on your skis - next to useless. I suspect that is what a "machine wax" is with S&R. Wax should nourish the skis' bases and you only get that with heat - to really "soak in" if you like. Surface wax gets scraped off very quickly (unless you are in the Dolomites right now Laughing) and it's the stuff that is soaked in to your bases that makes the real difference. imo there is a lot of BS talked about ski servicing (and I did it for a short time as a job) but a good wax is worth the extra few quid every time. Although as mentioned above - it isn't that difficult. The only difficult part of servicing skis involves edge angles and base bevel (assuming no huge gauges).

finestgreen,

having seen one of those machines working whilst Schladming last year, I wouldn't let a decent pair of skis near them. As spyderjon, says go with a hand wax every time, and if don't trust them to do it go somewhere else Very Happy
