Poster: A snowHead

Back last weekend from a brilliant week staying in Dorfgastein and (aided by car a hire car and seven day Salzburg Super Ski Card) skiing at:
Dorfgastein
Bad Hofgastein
Badgastein
Sportgastein
Moelltal Glacier
Katschberg
For our first three or four days the Gastein Valley was snowless below about 1400m, with temperatures as high as 11C - but they'd one a fantastic job of maintaining runs to the valley. It then snowed down to the valley for our last three ski days, transforming the place into a winter wonderland, which was fantastic.
We had the full range of conditions in the week - packed powder at altitude, fresh powder, soft, spring, mush, worn/icy, hardpack - but all in all, very decent cover and excellent snow overall. The pistes were generally quiet and we had loads of runs to ourselves - even on powder days.
Pick of the week was the bluebird, unlimited fresh tracks off-piste powder day at Moelltal Glacier - just fantastic - but we also loved the variety and scale of the Gastein Valley. Katschberg was great for a day too - the resort is on a pass at 1650m, so the snow was excellent.
We even managed 75 minutes of skiing(powder day !!) on our last morning, before driving to Salzburg airport.... and checking in our ski bag with 2 mins to spare....Phew! Well worth the extra €21 for the seventh day ski pass - especially when compared to an hour at an indoor fridge .

Wow that is really thin cover! Used to go to schladming first weekend in jan and never seen it so bare. Nice to know they can cope with adverse conditions mind....

mountainaddict, nice report. Was at Katschberg yesterday, loads of snow but zero visibility. May try Moltaller glacier later this week when the weather improves, that has had massive snow in last few days but pretty much closed yesterday (wind or avi not sure).

They were all like that mozwold! Still great fun to ski - and a great illustration of the wonders of snowmaking.

We loved both. The vertical on the St Margarethen side of Katschberg is phenomenal and Moelltal's the best glacier area that we've skied (vs all the usual Austrian, Swiss and French suspects).

DB, how was it? Heading there this weekend (surprise birthday treat from the mrs!). We're going to be struggling over in Dienten now with the high pressure and sunny days for the next week, but wondering whether the Gasteins are still OK?

It is apparently the warmest winter experienced in Austria for almost 250 years. The investment in snowmaking facilities has paid off, but remember that a lot of the valley views are onto south facing hillsides which lose the snow first. To get decent off piste at the moment you need to be prepared to boot pack or skin, bring on a snowstorm please

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

The lower runs did become soft at the end of the day, the blazing sunshine and plus temps at altitude later next week won't help. Having said that slush is poor man's powder and the biggest problem was the visibilty. It looks like you are going to see a week of glorius sunshine. Have fun.
