Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Wearing new ski boots in the house.

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
My wife bought a new pair of boots on Sunday and has been told to wear them for 30 mins every day for 2 weeks and is essential that this is done to get them right before we go. I now want to buy a new pair next weekend but I work away during the week and can't take them with me. Too many bags on the train. How important is this bedding in process. I can do 4 nights a week but not Mon - Wed. I've read somewhere that wearing at home isn't really necessary. Any views. At the end of the day, I need to buy a pair anyway. I'm going to chamonix but don't want to buy in the resort as this will take up valuable skiing time.

Jonesj,

My God Man! Are You Mad??!

Book yourself in to Sole Bootlab (Chamonix) the first evening of your trip - the boys are usually open until 19h00. It doesn't even take up valuable drinking time as I am quite sure they will be happy to see you arrive with beer.

You realise that people will actually fly out to Cham solely (he he he) just to get boots fitted and then fly home again?

Do not waste the opportunity. Also, getting them fitted on night 1 means that any tweaking can be done during the week. Rather than buying in the UK and finding any tweaking needs to be done after a painful week skiing and you've got home.

And a far higher/better level of fitting, probably.

Thanks for this. Are they more expensive in Cham or same price. My wife will love a trip into town to watch me buy boots.

Don't walk with the boots, just stand in a natural skiing position otherwise it won't help.

Jonesj, They'll be broadly the same price. I think/would expect (but obviously I can't promise) that fitting will be included other than the cost of footbeds. You need footbeds.

Your good lady can pop across to the Morgane Hotel for a spa treatment or cocktails. wink or just wander around shopping in Eric Bompard, Chanel, Lacoste, Swarovski, etc. That may be more painful than the cost of new boots Twisted Evil

Maybe I'll just leave her at the chalet to look after the kids when I pop in! Sadly you mentioned all things important to her, cocktails and shopping. Just one thing, you don't work for them, do you? I've found them on twitter so amateur send them a message. Thanks for the help.

jonesj - get fitted in UK, if you had boots before you know what fits, if you have issues get sorted at Colins of Profeet. Tell your wife to wear her boots until she is bored, better to bed the liners in before you ski - but don't walk in them. Basically the liners in ski boots are pretty poor and the foam will bed in a tad - better to do it in a cold garage than in the house. 30 mins x 14 days = 7 hours is a tad excessive mind.

I skied for 4 years without footbeds and now get on fine with a £27 set of superfeet green and I only ended up getting those when my beginner boots had got a bit big due to liner packing and I couldn't afford a new pair at the time so I got footbed to help take up some volune. I think it depends on your foot whether you need bespoke (bootfitter produced and molded to your foot) footbeds.

Hmmm, my new liners are on day 6 i.e. hour 42... and are just about ready for some tweaking, maybe.

Jonesj, nope, I do not work for them. I have used them quite a lot though. But don't go by me - loads of people like them on here.

tailskidder, "if you had boots before you know what fits" - pish! Most people have no idea what fits, whether they've had boots before or not. And who are "Colins of Profeet"? I take it you mean Colin (aka CEM) at Solutions for Feet, and/or Profeet in Fulham? Certainly CEM is worth a shot if the OP has time to get to Bicester. I am not so sure about Profeet myself...but my somewhat variable experience was 10 years ago... I'd say again tha tbeing in resort, where the lads can sort out any issues as they happen, seems like the way forward to me.

Megamum, yeah, well, maybe, maybe not. I can't wear boots without them and my feet aren't that weird. Mind you, my boots fit properly... You do what your boot fitter tells you.

I'd second under a new name - if you're already going to Chamonix to ski, and need boots, go to SOLE. They can fit you in the evening so you miss no ski time, you can bed them in properly on the hill, and have them tweaked in the evenings straight away if you need. It would be the best way to get a perfect fit for your holiday and after.

Disclaimer - I haven't personally had boots fitted by them yet, but will as soon as my current boots or just liners need replacing, likely later this season. They did a great job sorting out bindings for my new skis a few weeks ago, and my housemate and several very good friends have had boots fitted there with excellent results. They are first choice for everyone I ski with in Geneva and Cham, and great guys to have a drink with too!

Cheers everyone. I'm driving over and should be there early enough on Saturday to get a pair. I'll give them a call and if they're open late enough I'll go there. Only 6 weeks to go

Jonesj, do that. It's a good 90 minute process though, so take beer. They seem reasonably beer agnostic...
