Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Prognosis for 2014 season in Alps?

I get the impression it's been pretty warm so far this year. If this keeps up, our trip (Oberlech, scheduled for April) may involve relatively little skiing!

Any mystics around here got any guesses as to what lies ahead weatherwise? wink

No guesses, but from a lot of empirical evidence I'd say there is zero correlation between weather in early January and weather in April. FWIW an ESF instructor I was with last week thought that there was a "décalage" of a month in the winter's arrival and that that April would be like March!

But of course, that was a guess...... and right now January is like April, but with a less snow. wink

I think it depends whether you are talking on piste skiing or off piste skiing. Certainly for on piste, in the 3 valleys at
least, conditions on piste gave been no different to any other year. snow conditions are more affected by the climate
over current period and how many people are cutting up the pistes.

thewinelake, and the general forecast for next week is to see a return to winter...an least in the Northern Alps. Which will have nothing to do with April either.

I was skiing knee deep fresh powder on April the first in Austria last year. The seasons do seem to be extended these days, I'm waiting for more resorts to stay open all April Smile

I skied in Val Thorens 1st week May last year and the snow got a bit slushy coming down into the vilagebut other than that it was great, particularly early morning.

Went back in June for some renovations and walked up the hill to relieve some boredom from the ghost town. If you could have been bothered to walk to the top you could easily have still skied on many of the north facing higher up slopes.

Impression? It is like summer here in Geneva at the moment. Bonkers warm for this time of year.

There will be weather!

Looks like the Dollies got all the snow, and I guess they're kind of not really the Alps, even if right next to them.

I have experienced arriving in Verbier (the year was around 1969) in April, with snow 3 metres deep in the village ... and then continuous blizzards for a fortnight. An avalanche blocked the road along the French side of Lake Geneva as we tried to return to Geneva - it had taken a huge vertical slide.

I'd be confident of great skiing in Oberlech in April. Winters tend to balance out, and a good early winter isn't vital.

Just for interest, I never forward-book April skiing. There are usually great deals for late-bookers, and it's often the best month of the season to ski.

The slopes in Oberlech certainly catch the sun they nearly all face south, that's why its such a good place to enjoy a slope side lunch.
I've skied there in April before and it was great ... in the morning but after lunch it was more water skiing.

But dont worry there will still be plenty to ski in the area ...
I'm told the link into Warth is open this year so there will be some new stuff in the shade over there.

+ there are the shady sides of Zug and the Madloch Joch to do without having to bus around to Stanton.

And just because its very mild in January means nothing we could have a total freeze up by March and then you will haven chosen wisely.

If someone offered me a chance to Ski in Lech in April ... I'd be off like a shot.
Another thing .. the crowds will be gone.
