Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

I’m not an adrenalin junkie, I’m meditating.

I've been thinking a lot about what I do and why I do it, which has come up with some interesting introspectives.

While I've been poo pooing Meditation and other 'new age' stuff, it seems that I've maybe been meditating all along, just doing it differently from most.

Rather than rewriting the whole lot here, it's on my blog.

Thoughts?

I've had a few people comment that it rings true with them.

That's quite the power plough 105km/h! Toofy Grin

The term in psychology is Flow and I find visualisation really useful both for skiing and for climbing. I've solved some boulder problems for myself in bed or in the shower.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I'd just come through the compression and was starting to brake for the exit onto the piste. I don't know why they didn't point the camera further up the slope Smile

feef, I figured it was something like that, it'd have to be pretty damn steep otherwise. Very Happy

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

I agree wholeheartedly. The purest and best moments in life and sport are when you are completely and utterly 100% focused, with nothing else entering your mind. In both climbing and skiing I find that you try to walk the knife edge - the adrenaline rush means you've made a mistake, and you sure as hell don't want that. I also don't like it when people say I am taking 'unecessary risk' - the whole aim when engaging in sports like these is to negate the risk, to control the danger. It is always a calculated decision, not blindly leaping into the void.

rasmanisar, Yup, I rock and ice climb and also love skiing, but I'm quite risk adverse. It's that pure single minded concentration that allows everything else to slip away, I love it when every move becomes one of surgical precision and utmost confidence.

feef, nice one! It occurs to me that breathing, awareness and total concentration are also key to playing a musical instrument and to singing (of which I do a lot, and which keeps me well, both mentally and physically). And in performance, the adrenalin rush only kicks in, exactly as you describe, when something's gone wrong!
