Hi, I got back into skiing a couple of years ago after 10-15 years snowboarding and although I can get around on skis fine I'd like to get a few lessons to improve my technique, particularly in powder. Can anyone recommend a good (and preferably cheap) instructor in Chamonix for some private lessons? I live in Geneva and got back into skiing so I can go touring more easily so anyone who doubles up as a guide would be even better. My wife and I are looking to do the haute route this spring so someone who guides that would be great

Cheapest option is probably ESF Argentiere (€90 for 2 hrs private), where I can highly recommend Sebastien Mogeny. I've had a few lessons from him including one in crud/heavy powder which was excellent and very useful for my technique. Only problem is that he's also the technical director of the ski school so only teaches alternate weeks.
If you want to go for a moniteur-guide, the price will be somewhat higher.

Michel Bruel and Gerard Menard are both instructors and guides but both work privately and for Evo2, so I'm not sure how their prices fit within your budget. One of them would be my recommendation.
Why not use an instructor for lessons and then a guide for touring? Or are you looking for someone to provide instruction while guiding you on a tour?

I was more just thinking if I found someone I liked it would be more fun touring with them, and avoid the chance of signing up to a multi-day tour with someone I didn't get on with

Ahh, makes perfect sense. You should enjoy either of my recommendations. They both have wry senses of humour and I've thoroughly enjoyed my time with them.
