Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Urgent help needed, find us a Holiday for 11th/12th of Jan

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi all,

I'm looking to book a holiday this weekend to fly out on the 11th or 12th of this month for myself, an intermediate skiier, one friend who's an intermediate boarder and another friend whos' a beginner boarder. We almost booked Mayrhofen but after making this thread: http://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?t=106092 and hearing about the poor conditions in the west we decided against it.

From the same thread I looked at the following lists of resorts as recommended by Onnem:

Onnem wrote:
Best snow conditions by far, to be found in north-western part of Italy. Cervinia, Champoluc, Gressoney, Alagna, La Thuile, Courmayeur, Madesimo, Sestriere, Bardonecchia, Livigno.

and used www.wheretoskiandsnowboard.com to shortlist these resorts: Cervinia, La Thuile, Sestriere, Sansicario, Livigno or Sauze d'Oulx.

Myself and the intermediate boarder went to Sauze d'Oulx in January and had a fantastic time, we would like to try somewhere new but the most important thing is getting good conditions and a good hotel.

Our criteria:

- Under £600 for flights, accommodation and transfers
- Enough slopes to keep us entertained for the week, no less than Sauze d'Oulx (Via Lattea) 300-350km
- We aren't partically bothered about apres ski, we would rather have an early night and get onto the slopes asap

I've found a few holidays but not reading the best reviews on the hotels that Crystal and Inghams were offering within our budget.

We would appreciate some package suggestions, Half Board hotel or Catered Chalet please

What can you find us? Very Happy

Thanks!

how is les arcs doing for snow? I've been here and loved it (you can search for my review from last year) and it's very high (and way bigger an area than Sauze Doulx)

I like all of those - skiworld have a bunch more french cheap too - their sale started today Toofy Grin Val Thorens, Tignes or Courchevel will have decent snow by most standards even in a bad year and the skiworld prices are gooooood.

Happy hunting!

Thanks AJ, some good suggestions there!

Looking at the chalet in La Rosiere, am I understanding it correctly that it's only £9 extra for flights?

Also it says £924 total for three adults, but "TBB" Twin Room?

Lastly, I should have mentioned, my friend has a snowboard to take with him if that makes a difference?

Thanks

if snow conditions are a priority, then just about anywhere in the Dolomites. Arabba, Canazei, Selva, Corvara, Alta Badia...
Don't know which tour ops go there though.

Just had a 1.5m dump. Another dusting this weekend. The 1m the Arabba report at the village should easily last until after the birthday bash in Feb, without any new snow.

Certainly not expensive for meals/drinks.

TBBseems to mean twin beds (check romm numbers against the descriptions) That £9 is just the flight supplement, the original 'free' flight is full (and was probably at back bottom oclock anyway) just pick a cheap/conenient flight option. Snowboard is £35 return on top (you need to add as an extra)

Why do I know all this? Just finished booking ours! Wink

Looking at your suggestions, are these well suited to our critera? I've read Alta doesn't allow snowboarding!

actually the la rosiere has a triple room and skiworld are coming up pretty good even with 2 rooms between the three of you, so all the ski world would be good deals.

Different alta - alta badia is in italy, not america Smile

I think the selva is the best snow, and la rosiere is on your list so do take a look at those, but for me ski world les arcs/valThorens/tignes etc the best value. That's why I just booked one! (different week to you)

All I can see is the option to add £9 for flights which I thought was the supplement? I can't see the triple room either

Thanks

Alta Badia most certainly does allow snowboarding. I don't know anywhere in Europe that bans it.

The Corvara - Alta Badia - San Cassiano side of the dolomites is perfect for beginners/intermediate (all the villages I mentioned are fully linked). Actually the other villages are not difficult either really, in general.

Yes, I'd take that £9 flight. The site gets a bit touchy when you back in and out of the booking screen. Might think I have it 'reserved' as I went in to check the codes. Give it 5 mins and also check you are telling it there are 3 of you Wink It tends to default back to 2 at times.

Chalet Choucas:
1 TWB – twn jacuzzi bath/wc + sofa
It's a twin with a sofa bed. Or pay £120 each more and you can have two rooms between you.
Chalet Marmotte:
3. TBW – twin j.bath/wc(e.bed)

All three of the la rosiere have the same room in them in some form or another. Open each room and see which ones say '3 adults' or read the room descriptions before you go into the booking form bit, it says which room numbers are triples.

Don't know the Olympia (if it's the one I think, it's 5min walk to lifts). We usually stay at the Portovescovo, but that's pricier.

Would you recommend Arabba for a beginner boarder andy? I thought I remembered it being a bit steep, hence trying selva instead.

it does have steeper terrain, yes (as well as pretty easy). It does have steeper runs on one side.
Selva also a good choice. Canazei too (big open bowl is basically a beginner playground). Corvara probably not on the tour op radar, so DIY.

We've had near beginners on the birthday bash there manage the full circuit, which includes those steeper sections.

Can't wait to go back... only 4 weeks to go...

George 3G, http://www.alpineanswers.co.uk/ski-chalet-deals can be a useful site to find deals

Personally i wouldn't take a newbie to Arrabba as moving off the bunny slopes to something a bit longer is not an easy transition to make. Any of the pistes taken are petty much all 'through' pistes so as well as nervous newbies you get people gunning through as fast as they can to get round the ronda

Selva/San Cassiano might be a better bet in that regard

Thanks Boredsurfin, great suggestion. Although I did remove La Plagne from a previous shortlist due to hearing it wasn't very well suited to snowboarders and in some areas there is even rope to pull them across the flat areas?

Thanks

yes, and Ortisei, Campitello, Colfosco, San Cassiano, Marmolada... and more (it's a massive area - those are just the villages that are lift linked!)

Doing some research it looks a good area!

I've found the following packages:

Cortina HB £509
Selva HB £609

That's all I could find, I'd appreciate if some more could be hunted out for me please! Preferably flying form Birmingham but could accept Gatwick. Either HB hotel or Catered Chalet

Thanks

One of the ones I put up originally is selva:
Selva: http://www.igluski.com/selva/chalet-igloo_p19597?holidayid=62218524

However I think the conditions are already shifting - the report from selva now say "best conditions on upper piste" (code for it;s starting to get a bit manky) while more traditional high traffic resorts like les arcs now say "Great Conditions on all slopes"
http://www.skiclub.co.uk/skiclub/snowreports/snowreport.aspx?resort=Les-Arcs&swqsResortGo=Go#.UsgUn_RdWSo
http://www.skiclub.co.uk/skiclub/snowreports/snowreport.aspx?resort=Selva-Gardena&swqsResortGo=Go#.UsgVB_RdWSq

Las rosiere/la thuile also still looking good - although I worry about the linking lifts for snowboarders (the lift between resorts is a drag iirc)
http://www.skiclub.co.uk/skiclub/snowreports/snowreport.aspx?resort=La-Rosiere&swqsResortGo=Go#.UsgVHfRdWSo

I'd go with the la rosiere if price is the thing, les arcs 2000 (ski world offer) if conditions are the thing. If you want dolomites though (which I do also love, it's just not my first thought for snow sure) then the chalet I linked to above is the best value imo.
