Poster: A snowHead

Hi everyone, can anyone help please ? I am heading off to Breckenridge in mid-Feb and would really like to improve my off-piste skiing. Does anyone know of a guide that they can recommend, because I am really struggling to find someone but he/she must exist ! Thanks. Matt

Hi Matt,
I'm going there in a few days. I can ask around for you but I'll only be able to give you second hand information, as I don't know anyone personally.
I'll see what I can do.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

mge1969,
I think you just need to ask the local ski school what you want to do. I'm not sure that "guides" as such operate out of Breckenridge for skiing. More mountaineering focused. The ski school however will have folks that will upgrade your off piste skiing.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

You're struggling to find one because there's no such thing as "off-piste guide" in North America!
If you want an instructor to "improve your off-piste skiing", you can get that from the ski school

As above ski school - go on Epic for name instructor recommendations if you have the ambition/pocket for private lessons. If you're going for group lessons I'd say shoot for Monday to Thursday. They should be doing student focused lessons so be very firm about what you want to do and let them find a way of doing it i.e. don't just think it'll be a standard syllabus for an "advanced lesson" etc.

abc, not strictly true... Jackson Hole Mountain Guides will happily take you off piste. You do have to skin up however

Those are not "off-piste guides". They're ski touring guides. (actually, I think the proepr terminology might be Backcountry Guide)
Jackson Hole is a singular exception in the US. It's the only place that offer guiding service for lift-served "side country" (down mountain) skiing, which is really very much the equivalent of European "off-piste" skiing. No skin required.

I asked a couple of the locals. The guys are right. There's o such thing as off-piest. The whole area is open really. You could certainly ask if someone from the ski school would give you a tour of the better areas, but the general information guys will happily point you in the right direction.
If your pass allows, I'd highly recommend a day trip over to the Key Stone slopes.
