Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Best bet for snow week of 4 January

I was planning to go to Val D'Isere but the conditions are not to my liking at the moment. Saas-Fee, Andermatt and Zermatt seem to have the best snow depth at the moment but I wonder if the glaciers at the top skew the figures. Any thoughts on the best bet for this particular week?

If I was going to be placing bets, I would have thought Val d'Isere / Tignes would be your best bet for snow on 4 jan at this moment in time

Ditto Peanuthead's comment - Tignes is one of Europe's bankers for decent snow. If conditions are 'not to your liking' in Espace Killy, chances are they'd not be elsewhere too.

Anyway, as conditions are still being described as good at the moment, aren't you being a little picky chraya? Not to mention that there's about 20cm of snow forecast in the next couple of days and the longer term outlook is unsettled - which means snow wink .

WTF do you mean? What sort of skiing are you after, powder, backcountry, freestyle, touring, ski ballet, cross country , piste, race training or are you a beginner looking for a bunny slope? As far as I know the piste are in good shape in Val. I doubt anywhere in the alps has great off piste at the moment. I also know many resorts in Austria have great piste conditions with decent base. What conditions are like in 2.5 weeks from now is a total guess. One decent storm rolling could transform a whole set of resorts depending what direction the weather is coming from. If you want a snow condition guarantee try Milton Keynes

waynos, if the conditions in Val D'Isere are not to his liking then perhaps he should try one of these resorts for 4th January.

Looks like there will be plenty of snow before the 4th January, meteo.fr are currently forecasting at least 4 days of bad weather across France from Christmas Day. That should mean plenty of snow at the higher altitiude resorts.

snow forecast currently showing nearly 50cm on xmas day. Things will change no doubt but looking a good bet at the moment, which is excellent for me as I'm off there 4th jan. Yipee Madeye-Smiley

Val D'Isere is showing a 75cm base at the top. I've skied it with twice that amount and the conditions were only OK. The off piste is looking very bad as the new snow will cover a very weak layer.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

In fairness, chraya, it's gonna be similar or worse everywhere else in the Alps for off-piste. The best case scenario now would appear to be big dump of heavy moist snow, and currently best bet for that in next 2 weeks looks like in France

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

chraya, I was out in the Espace Killy last week. Conditions on piste were generally great with only a few of the lower runs a bit scraped off, and there was a good base on all the runs down to about 1800 m. Given the good top up forecast over the coming week, it will be super in the first week of January.

I guess the issue of the avalanche risk off-piste will probably be pretty much the same all over the Alps as I think everywhere has had the same prolonged spell of dry sunny weather?
