Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Austria: Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang snow report 13/14

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Though in the past I have reported on the Ski Circus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang in the general Austria Snow Report thread, since it is an area that generates much interest I decided this time to start a separate topic. And today it deserved it! John Barr and I had a super day with fantastic weather, blue cloudless skies all day. Here is a first view from alongside the Asitzmuldenbahn in Leogang, with the mists that hung in the valley all day...

The pistes were in fine condition, very hard to start with but softening in the sun. However, there is still no depth of snow and that shows away from the prepared pistes, like here under the Schönleiten 6er chairlift...

But, if you aren't looking for off-piste, there is nothing to complain about. This photo from the bottom station of the Kohlmais cable-car with the Turm chairlift and the beginners' slopes in the background shows more what the pistes look like...

We were able to ski the complete Circus, anticlockwise, only missing the two Spieleck lifts at the far west end which weren't running and the black valley runs which weren't open. One or two other lifts still weren't operating but there were more than enough to satisfy, including the new Rosswald 6-seater chairlift (replacing a T-bar)...

At the end we were able to ski back down to the valley in Leogang, ending a great day!

Nice pics, and great conditions, as it generally is most years at this time in December, and yet I'll wager that the pistes are fairly deserted and most of the accommodation stands empty.

in fact with the warm conditions the sun is nicely softening up some of the o.p. with near spring-snow conditions. Had some great o.p over by the closed Seekar drag before lunch, then more of the same from the top of the Spielechkogel and beyond this p.m.
Yesterday great spring snow behind the fence at the Limberg too Happy

Any updated weather reports here? I was in Hinterglemm over Christmas and loved it so going back at half term. Wish there was some colder weather approaching. Sick of seeing/hearing about warm temps. Anyone there at the min to give a good picture?

matt23, I was at a hotel/hostel called Young Generation Resort Buchegg. It's right on the slopes (literally ski to about 20m from the door) but quite far up the slopes so getting about without transport is tricky to say the least!

We went there on a walking holiday in September and liked it so much (including the Alpine Palace hotel in Hinterglemm), we are going back there to ski - next week. Snow conditions don't look brilliant at the moment unfortunately, and it is a bit worrying that in our enthusiasm we convinced 4 others to come with us! Hope they will remain friends. Oh well, if the skiing is crap the hotel is lovely!

Just to report that we had a fantastic week in Hinterglemm/Saalbach last week. Snow was much better than expected, but confined to pistes. Heavy investment in snowmaking throughout the resort has helped massively this year. Weather forecast is better I hear, so looking good for people going out soon. Enjoy. PS can definitely recommend the Alpine Palace too.

I toured round the Ski Circus today with a friend visiting from England. We started from Leogang and completed the same anti-clockwise route that Espri described above. The snow on south facing slopes was great in the morning, but getting slushy lower down by midday. In the afternoon we completed the route on the other side of the valley where the snow was still firm, but serious mogul fields were forming. Although some of the routes down to the villages were busy, we found many empty pistes. The final piste back to the car park at Leogang was badly scraped - perhaps it would have been better to use the gondola for the last section - but other than that the snow was great all day.

We have had so many days of blue skies that it has felt like Easter skiing since December! The staff deserve a medal for keeping the pistes in such great condition.

We've covered all areas of the Ski Circus in the last three days and have found conditions to be generally better than during most of January. Skied clockwise from Schattberg to the Goassstall today, encompassing a few runs on the Zwoelferkogel (including black 14) and Hochalm. Beautiful sunny weather (as seems to be the norm this season) and all enjoyable (except for the horrendous (drum and bass?) music at the Walleggalm!) Freeze/thaw conditions means that all pistes are firm in the morning, with the south-facing side of the valley turning slushy lower down by mid-afternoon. However all main pistes seem to be amply covered, and the north-facing ones (eg. number 14) were in particularly nice, powdery condition. Good to see all lifts and pistes at the Seekar and Spieleck extremities now open, but piste 68 down to Viehhofen sadly remains closed, as it has been for virtually all of the season (the Hecherhuette must be feeling the pinch!)

Some friends did Leogang today and were enthusing about the snow over there, so we'll be heading that way tomorrow. Piste conditions can of course be very changeable; for example, a group of friends came down piste 2b to Jausern last Sunday, in hot, sunny weather, and said that it was possibly the worst snow they had ever experienced. We persuaded them to do it again yesterday afternoon, towards the end of a clockwise circuit of the valley, and we were all very pleasantly surprised (as well as relieved!), thanks to cooler air temperatures.

There is apparently cause for optimism for the next 5 days; the resort website is cautiously predicting colder temperatures, with the freezing level sinking as low as 800m on Saturday, and new snow at the weekend.

On another positive note, there is some serious sun-bathing being done, and the party atmosphere at our usual après-haunts, the Bergeralm, Hinterhag Alm and Goassstall, has been really excellent of late. Again, better than January, which this year holds memories of 'iffy' weather and snow conditions, and excessively crowded party venues. Our friend Hansi assures us that it will all be back to normal next season!

Hi, can anyone give a current snow report here please? We are heading off on 26 March and looking for decent snow preferably somewhere in Austria with large ski area.

Typical Spring skiing at present, with good, firm pistes in the morning and on north-facing slopes in the afternoon, soft and slushy on south-facing pistes in the afternoon. Forecasted to cool down temporarily on Sunday with possibly a sprinkling of new snow. Lower, south-facing pistes suffering in the hot sun, but freezing rock-hard at night. Will be skiing in a tee-shirt tomorrow!

Just booked a week 5th April, GFS runs seem to show a change in the weather over the next couple of weeks. Obviously this is FI and anything can happen but a bad days skiing has got to beat a good days working. Very Happy

RedorDead, You just booked Saalbach-Hinterglemm for 5th April? Go to the other Saalbach thread > http://www.snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?t=104841&start=280 to read the current report.

Temperatures this week have been in the 20's C in the village and very warm on the mountain. It was 34 dec C at Seidl Alm earlier in the week, and it was even hotter at Sport Alm on Reiterkogel yesterday. People were going inside to eat to cool down. It's currently over 18 deg C in Saalbach - at 17.00 in the afternoon.

Skiing is great if you get up early and ski until lunchtime, but pistes are deteriorating rapidly and the lift company will now start to shut down large areas as temperatures rise and guest numbers dwindle. According to the report on the other thread, only Schattberg, Westgipfel and Zwolfer are likely to be open, but on the plus side, you'll have them all to yourself.
