Hi
Has anyone skied at Garmisch yet this winter? We're hoping to spend a few days there around christmas.
Never been before and wondered whether Austria might be a safer bet? From what info i can find there doesn't seem to be much snow and weather seems mild and stable . We're flying into munich.

embers merino, snow conditions at the moment are ok, i.e 75cm on the mountain, but that says nothing about what the conditions will be like at Xmas. I have not been yet because at the moment only the Hausberg area is open. Will maybe be going in a week or so. If all else fails you always have the glacier to fall back on.

embers merino, takes a while. You have to get the train from Garmisch to Eibsee and then change, either to the cable car or take old funicular up to the glacier direct. The complete journey takes about 1h15 no matter which way you go. I tend to take the train to the glacier these days because with the cable car you have to change at the top and get another cable car down to the glacier.
Having said that, the cable car trip itself is pretty mind blowing; it's a 2000 vert. meter run with a single pylon near the beginning. Impressive. The glacier can have great skiing if mild off piste is your thing. Well worth a visit.

Steilhang, Thanks for your help. Both modes of getting to the top sound pretty interesting so will try and do both to get the full experience! Looking fwd to the skiing and the Bavarian hospitality!

I went up to the Zugspitze glacier yesterday and the snow was great up there. Skied the Hausberg today. On piste was fine, a bit hard in shady areas and soft in the sun and depth seemed fine up top. Didn't ski to the valley, so I can't comment, but saw a few people going all the way down. Open runs are very limited right now though. Runs by the Alpspitzbahn and the Kreuzeckbahn are not open yet.

Oh, and from the Eibsee parking lot to glacier plateau yesterday took us about 40 minutes. We took the cable cars and there were little to no crowds. The train takes longer and I believe that the cable car method will take longer if there are more people.

Are the costs to get to the glacier by cable car / train the same? (included in the ski pass?)

With the roundtrip ticket for the Zugspitze, I think you choose how you get there - train or cable cars. I'm not 100% certain as we have season tickets, so I've never given it much thought how it works for a day visitor. But I believe that a ticket to the Zugspitze means you can take the train or the cable cars.
I was up at the Hausberg ski area again for a few hours today. Pistes continue to be in great condition despite no new snow and you just can't beat the weather we're having - sunshine and blue skies. I really do wish we could get some more snow though as most runs int he Garmisch-Classic area are still closed.

novafan, Thanks for the info, as our hotel is quite close to the train station in Garmisch we may just jump on the train. 2 of our group need to hire skis when they arrive. Are there plenty of options in Garmish?

Markmcn, most of the Garmisch classic area opened up yesterday, and they had 10cm of new snow up on the Glacier. Mostly artificial snow in the classic area I think. I still havn't got round to going, too many children's birthdays and other xmas stuff to deal with here

We were up at the Hausberg again this morning. Garmisch received a dusting of snow last night that made the first few hours of skiing on piste nice. I left my kids and then went back to pick them up and they said the run to valley was just a little bit better than yesterday. It still wasn't as much as we'd like, but it sure did make the pine trees look pretty. Still hoping for much more snow later this week.

I was up in the classic area with the kids today. Was surprised at how good the condition of the pistes was, and It wasn't even all that busy. Was able to do the valley runs on Kandahar and Hausberg, no problems.
I think the next snow is scheduled sometime after Xmas.
