Looks good.... What combination of wood is that, if you don't mind my asking?

Avalanche Poodle, well it does sound rather porous!!

Hey there my man,
Looking good, is this the first version? Are you going to be able to test them yourself yet?
I'm going to try get some snowshoeing (or winter walking) logbook days in whilst its dry and sunny so if your fit enough let me know.

Balsa can produce great cores when used with the correct laminates and ribs and a good binding retention plate.

Dot., Interesting. I know it makes damn fine aircraft, boats and surfboards, I had assumed that something as thin as a ski would require a stronger wood. But like you say, well laminated and bonded it should work

The strength wouldnt come from the balsa in this instance .... It would be there mainly as filler between strengthening elements ??

tomb, also has very good dampening elements.

tomb, Probably more of touring ski technology I should imagine. Still may be stronger than some foam core skis though

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

tomb, It is balsa - but vertically and horizontally orientated lamination's and there is two vertically laminated piles of flax.
There are bamboo plates for binding reinforcement.
The strength does come from the two sandwich layers of fiberglass.
OliC, No, I won't be the first on these, I'm still not allowed out to play

Looking good! Idris, i realise these are prototypes, what kind of top sheet will you add to these? And will it add much to the overall weight?

tomb, why add a topsheet? my only thought is performance in adverse/steep/icy conditions and longevity?

Masque aesthetics... And by top sheet I actually meant a graphic layer, although I understand you need another clear layer of polyethylene as a very top layer.
Also thinking about it, I can't imagine that an unprotected wood top is conducive to good ski production... Snow and water would cause havoc on most woods, let alone balsa.

tomb, Yes it has to be sealed but a USP could be 'seeing the machinery' We have a plethora of naff graphics out there and these presumably would be marketed on their 'bare naked' weight . . . so why cover their core mechanics?

I agree in theory, although to me personally these would look unfinished...
Also (I may be wrong) but I don't think you can get away with anything other than a polyethylene top sheet... You couldn't varnish the wood for instance.... (again I may be wrong) but I'm also sure the graphic layer adds next to nothing weight wise as it's only a very thin layer of printed vinyl....

Masque, not really a USP, there are several skis on the market with clear topsheets (and plenty of others with wood veneers on top).
tomb, I know absolutely nothing about the mechanical problems of wood, but there are also skis with wooden sidewalls/the core is the sidewall (no 'covering layer') so I guess in theory it could be possible.
Idris, pretty, and LIGHT!!
