Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Ski gear in Aldi...

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Aldi have ski gear due in this Thursday (5th Dec). All their usual stuff including 2 levels of merino base layers and some wool/silk mix ski socks.

I know it's been mentioned in the Lidl thread but thought it's worth another plug.

tomb, I know what you mean. Same in mine. 6 x pairs of socks, 4 x 2nd base layers, 3 x pair of gloves, 1 x pair of sport glasses with interchangeable lenses... and a partridge in a pear tree.....

All for under 70 pound! Happy with that.

I wonder why they introduce these ranges on weekdays when the majority of working people can't shop until late evening? You'd think the weekend would be a better plan so that people other than the retired, unemployed and shift workers can have a crack...

Cheaper to get weekday deliveries than weekend deliveries, and the likes of Aldi and Lidl have very small backshop store rooms to maximise shop floor space at minimal cost so they'd have nowhere to store it till the weekend when it is delivered.

If you really really want something you pop in on your way to work or out at lunchtime, or get a job with an modern employer that allows a tiny bit of flexible working. I don't think Aldi and Lidl hard goods stocking policy is designed to discriminate against the hard working man/woman - it's just the way it is. Plus if they operate on a when its gone its gone basis so it doesn't really matter to them if a certain class of people are effectively excluded.

Their specials always start either Thursday or SUNDAY. Just happens that ski gear is in the Thu sale this time around.

Plenty of stuff still in the one next door to my place but it's all been mixed up in the bins. Don't think there's many jackets/trousers been sold so I guess skiing isn't popular around here, plus there's 1/2 a dozen more stores within 5 miles.

I called in this afternoon on my way to school run - bought various socks including some of the silk-mix which were very good last year, at £4.99 a pair, a zip-neck top (again, past experience has been fine) at £4.99, plus some of the interchangeable lens sunglasses - haven't tried them before but at £3.99, why not? I'm off to AdH next week so will try them out then Very Happy
The soft shell ladies trousers looked OK, but too big for me.

Just gone back to pick up another per of the sunglasses.... why not at 3.99.

Still quite a bit left. The perks of working from home Wink

fatbob, there isn't an Aldi on the way to work or accessible during a dinner break, I'm sure that's true for many people, it means making a special journey. I'm not bothered myself, I don't need any new gear and I'm happy to get my stuff from Decathlon anyway, I was just speculating why they effectively restrict their market for limited range goods by introducing them whilst the majority of people are at work.

Same goes for gig tickets, they seem to always go on sale at 9am on weekdays when fewer people are in a position to sit on the phone/internet for ages trying to buy them.

queen bodecia, you could argue they restrict their market far more by only selling ski gear in limited quantities for a limited week of the year - it's just their business model to rotate lots of hard goods into stores to keep bringing new punters through the doors and get regular food shoppers to spend a bit more. If you don't have a Aldi anywhere near you as I don't they don't care about making you happy. Shame as I'd have quite liked a couple of pairs of Merino socks but not to the extent that I'm prepared to get home and drive to a town 15 miles away before 8pm tonight. I don't see it as a flaw in the way they do business - last week I picked up a pair of goggles from Lidl for peanuts as there is one nearer me.

Are the base layers being sold as separates ? In past years they've been boxed as sets and the sizes are not always a good match.

Mind you, I suppose I could buy two packs and eBay the unwanted sizes.

Yeah, tops and leggings were separate, although there was a onesie type one as well, which I imagine would be a total nightmare when you need to spend a penny.

Bought a ski shirt for £4.99 today. Pleased with it. Just be aware that the sizes appear to be generous. I bought a large (which fits) and I am usually XL. There again, I could be just bragging about my weight loss again.

It is one of those smooth fleeces that are a bit furry on the inside. Clothes not my forte....

I was a bit concerned about that as I have eczema on my left cubital fossa. Didn't buy it but would love to find a cheaper alternative to Icebreaker

Wow! there's usually quite a bit left round here, but it got ganneted. I'm not sure if there ever were thermal trousis in my size. I seem to recall that they only went down to 32 last year. Ski pants also sold.

On the plus side, they have the decent snow boots with a sticky grip. They don't last so long if used on a lot of pavements, but at that price, I don't mind. Plenty of cheap tops and compression gear left too.

Anyone know if the kids ski gear in Lidl/Aldi has been and gone? I've been keeping an eye out on the mails they send out but not seen anything kids specific. My little lad could do with some new trousers before the end of Jan.

My 14 YO and I both think the Aldi stuff is great, lighter than my Icebreaker 260 so perfect for spring skiing and every bit as comfortable. My 9 YO on the other hand refuses to wear it as she says it is itchy so guess it comes down to how sensitive your skin is.
