Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

England down to 4 real ski areas after new year

Sad news about Harwood Common. After new year Harwood ski federation will be closing its lift in Upper Teesdale after 40 years of operation. its insuranc will run out. England will be down to 4 real ski areas. In 1981 there were at least 9.

Ultimately a societal shift in attitudes away from volunteering time towards an expectation of comfort and paying someone else to do the hard work, has led to a decline in clubs generally. It’s a pity because their gulley is probably a more reliable place to ski than nearby Yad Moss which is only slightly higher. It didn't help last year that the Raby estate would not allow the tow to run after 31st March.

You will of course still be able to ski there, courtesy of the right of access legislation, just not take the lift back up to the top.

Sad news I first skied at harwood and the short slope below the farm at Langdon Beck 40 yrs ago or so which awakened my enthusiasm for skiing and subsequent relocation to the Alps where I still live.
