Obergurgl has snow already. No trees though. Anyone go in January and care to comment?
Also Hotel Sportiv - any good?

Most places, including much lower ones, have snow already. And trees!! But it's November. Could be very different, for better or worse, come January.

January is generally a very good time for new snow - cold but uncrowded (except the new year, of course, which is very expensive and you would be better later in the month for snow anyway).

Thanks. Rather than say already 'has snow', I should perhaps say already has many lifts open.
Whiteouts is the worry. I agree January is usually a marvellous month to ski.

We were there in January 2011, brilliant skiing for most levels I would say, we actually liked the slopes at Hochgurgl slight more, the gondola ride between the two is a great ride by the way
We were in Chalet, but still wanted to venture out a bit in the evening, must admit on that front we were disappointed, most people just stay in their hotels it seems, not much going on at night at all

I've been to Obergurgl before at new year and it was fine, can't remember it being excessively cold but a cold front could just arrive. The hotel sportiv is quite new and next to the festkogl gondola, although, I've never stayed there. I usually stay in that same area, about a 10 minute walk to the centre of town. There are some trees off the Steinman lift, it's the place to go if the visibility becomes bad. Or, if you can ski off piste there are trees at the side of the festkogl bahn, next to the sportiv hotel.

Skied there Sunday, lots of pow, reasonable cold, god-awful visibility. That said navigating pistes was no problem (if not exactly pleasant), did get in the way of chasing untracked though. There are some treed areas lower down, in the area bottom-right of the piste map. Probably enough there to occupy you for a half day if you get real whiteout conditions.

Or does the Obergurgl lift ticket still cover you for a day at Soelden (which has some tree runs)?

I'd be surprised if there was no collaboration between the Oetztal resorts; Soelden and Obergurgl are only about a 15 min drive apart. I don't know anything about it though, Soelden isn't on my season pass.

You can get a day in Sölden included in your Obergurgl pass for about €15 but you MUST buy it at the time you buy your weekly pass.

When you buy your lift pass you can opt to pay a nominal sum (5 euro I think) to get a day in solden included. As previous posters have said there are tree runs around David's hutt area and over at hochgurgl the run down to the valley is all through the trees. The one thing you will not have to worry about is the lack of snow. We have been at Christmas for the past 14 years and never had a problem.

Not sure about the hotel George but the skiing there in Jan can be amazing if you get lucky with conditions.
We skied there this year, had a couple of massive dumps of snow followed by some clear days......definitely some of the best days skiing I've ever experienced, knee deep soft powder even on some of the higher pistes No queues there at all and if you fancy some après then thats on offer to. It was pretty cold as I remember though!!!!!!!
Enjoy your trip!

skied in Obergurgl last year 1st couple of days into Feb. It was seriously cold...we weren't sure whether it was due to the height of the resort, or that we were a month earlier that usual.
Bonus though that they are well set up for it with plastic front covers over most the chair lifts so you actually get warm going up rather than cold ! Also the Goulash on the mountains was a superb warm up. Have fun !

You can get to Solden on the skibus too. No need to go on the TO "away day" for an extra €20 a man.
