The Financial Times today publishes this article by Haig Simonian on the Swiss slide in ski racing fortunes in recent times. But their facts seem to be on the slide too:
Quote: |
The embarrassment is particularly acute since both countries [Switzerland and Austria] are among those that claim to have invented the sport - or at least been seminal in its development. The Swiss note the role of British aristocrats, such as Sir Arthur Lunn, and their clumsy endeavours in the Bernese Oberland decades ago. The Austrians respond that the Arlberg region around St Johann is rightly known as the "cradle" of downhill skiing. |

I'm also interested in the reference to Switzerland and Austria having made a "claim to have invented the sport". Is this true?
The history books of skiing have always made it perfectly clear who invented our sport, and there's plenty of documentary evidence!

David Goldsmith, interesting idea, Arnold Lunn never claimed to have invented skiing, what he did do was invent the idea of the winter skiing holiday, as such Murren could claim to be the ancestoral home of the ski holiday I suppose

Was it Al Gore or Harold Harb?

No, it was the founding publisher of the Financial Times, pictured here.
A very enthusiastic skier

Well, that pic is not Harald Harb, as the skis are definitely in a wedge!

Perhaps he was the first person to do a torchlit descent?

The guy in the pic is not Harald it's my old mate Lars Nielson who founded skiiing, ski hols and everything else skiing long before Arnold trod this earth. I was there when this portrait was crafted. We were tucked up in a bar with a couple of ski babes one of whom wanted a picture of Lars and as this was a quite regular occurence and he being a bit vain he always had a paint box and drawing materials stashed in his ruck sack along with a few roman candles for escorting ski babes back home after dark. And as already suggested it was in fact the day he invented the torch lit descent which explains why he had a roman candle aloft in his hand. Now where had he stuck the other one?

Whenever you read an article in a newspaper - even "good" ones - on a subject you know a lot about, there are usually important errors. Then you have the significant omissions of stuff that's too complicated or subtle to explain. Minor points being blown out of proportion, to make a big article out of a few crumbs of material. Not to mention any deliberate bias or prejudice. This particular article hardly matters, in the wider scheme of things. But what about all the articles on subjects you don't know much about, and would like to be accurately informed about? And what about stuff in the rubbish newspapers (e.g. Daily Mail etc, being provocative...)? Makes you wonder whether it is worth reading any of them.

The DTB is an excellent source of information with outstanding quality articles, it's just a shame that the government has decided that it no longer needs it to be circulated to Doctors in the NHS.
I'm more talking about the standard of medical reporting in the newspapers.
