Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

CHRISTMAS IN ST ANTON

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi,

I have booked to go to St Anton with my partner on 21st December - 28th December 2013.

This is the first time skiing in St Anton so not sure what to expect..Has anybody been over Christmas before? What usually happens there over Christmas or is it just like a normal day.

Any recomendations on where to eat/go out?

Thanks,
Danielle

Christmas is pretty good there. It's not as busy as New Year, there's quite a relaxed feel about. Apart from a few decorations it's business as usual, the Spar may close early on Xmas eve and will be closed on Xmas day, but everything else is open as usual.

Spent last season in St. Anton and back again this season so will be my 2nd Christmas.
As sah says it's a fairly normal day, we headed up the mountain for a cheeky bottle of champagne, skiied around a bit, went down to Krazy Kangaruh for lunch then a bit of apres followed by Christmas dinner.
Christmas eve is Austrian Christmas and a bit bizzare as none of the bars are allowed to play music! Bobo's was the only place open relatively late if I recall correctly out of the normal bars (excluding hotel bars probably) then some people went to midnight mass.
It's a cool place to spend Christmas, good skiing and can let off some festive steam with some gluhweins Toofy Grin

The 25th is just like any other day, restaurants, bars, lifts open as normal, and some shops too (including Spar from what I remember last few seasons). It's Christmas Eve, as said above, that they close early. Try and avoid having to go to Spar/MPreis/Billa in the run up to early closing on Christmas Eve, stupidly busy with people buying last minute food/drink.

Danielleg2801, Welcome to Snowheads! snowHead

Yes it's a good idea to book the dinner (by that I take it you mean the evening meal! Laughing ) on the Xmas Eve as many restaurants will be booked as they'll be putting on a special meal. Apart from the suggestion of the museum which is good but quite expensive, other places I can recommend are the Trodlerstube and the associated restaurant called the Train which specialises in Fondues, and the Fuhrmannstube if you like traditional Austrian cuisine and specialities which is also good value imv.

I have fond memories of Christmas in St Anton - staying in the Tannenhof before it went too upmarket.
Bobo's is a favourite of mine too.

Danielleg2801, You will need to book a meal on Christma Eve if your package does not cover it. Many places close early or do not even open, so try looking at some of the hotels as they will provide their guests with a meal. It will be earlier than usual, as the hotels will want to allow their non-resident staff to return home for their Christmas Eve family meal.

Christmas Eve is a really important family time for the Austrians, but not a huge material blow-out as it is in the UK. Presents are exchanged on Chritmas Eve as well. Christmas Day as you know it in the UK just does not happen. The 25th December is simply called the Erste Weihnachtstag (1st day of Christmas) and Boxing Day is simply called the second day of Christmas.

It is traditionally very quiet on xmas eve(24). This is a Xmas in Austria & a very
Special family evening.
Nearly all bars & restauants close after 18.00hrs

Most partys (no music oe dancing) are restricted to Hotels.

.My advice is. Take an early night sleep well then enjoy the dats after.

However, you can get a free Wine at the midnight mass in The St Anton
Or St Jakob church.

Every season the rules change & it is totay in the hands of the Mayor.

Danielleg2801, There will probably be one local chasing you round the place with a copy of The Daily Mail trying to convince you that you are a second rate earthling because you come from the UK. AFAIK everyone ignores him.

Other than that - Christmas Eve is really nice....sort of like a Coke advert but with more hugs. Christmas day was just another skiing day. As above, book dinner for Christmas eve. I ahem Embarassed 'know' someone who had to feed his kids toast and Skittles 'cos everywhere was closed or booked out. snowHead

Christmas eve evening nearly everything is shut so just have a huge apres in taps or wherever and everything back to normal on Christmas day.

Danielleg2801, Best place to spend Christmas IMO, you'll love it, so quiet and very festive, all the best bits but without the commercial aspects that spoil it in UK. Big dinner is Christmas Eve and Xmas Day is a normal day, suggest you book a big celebration meal for 24th, and it tends to be formal and 6-7 courses. midnight mass in the Church is also special and worth a visit. The slopes start to thin out about 3.30pm on Xmas Eve and the après is very quiet on 24th. Not going until mid January this season, will really miss Christmas there this year, need to be at home for family reasons.

Probably safer to book as soon as you can. Most places are closed, so availability will be very limited

If the Underground is allowed to open (Joan has been fighting many legal
battles unrelated) she is normally pre booked out by the summer!.

I think Joan has been fighting legal battles for 44 seasons (or is it 45?) Happy I hope she is allowed to open, what's the problem this time?
