Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

pre-operative advice please

 Poster: A snowHead

I've been diagnosed with a morton's neuroma in my foot, it's a thickening of the sheath of the nerve in part of the the foot probably caused by pressure from the bones in the foot, consultant recommends surgery to remove the resulting lump and also the nerve, resulting in a loss on sensation in 2 toes. Crying or Very sad

I'm not keen to commit to surgery if there are other options which anyone has found effective - how about it?

All or any advice appreciated before the scalpel descends.

Thanks.

PS it's seriously limiting my skiing or I wouldn't even consider surgery! Evil or Very Mad

AlpineWalker, this is a common operation for a specialist foot surgeon. I am sure your surgeon has just warned you that loss of sensation to 2 toes is a possibility. It does not usually happen.
There are non-operative treatments to be tried first. I hope your surgeon mentioned this.
There are a lot of websites out there dealing with this subject. I think these three are worth a look:

http://www.podiatrychannel.com/mortonneuroma/
http://www.spinalhealth.net/inj-foot.html
http://www.physsportsmed.com/issues/1997/05may/mollica.htm

The outcome is usually successful, but this is not garanteed. I am sure your surgeon mentioned this as well. If not, find another surgeon.

I second the advice of Jonpim, although non-operative methods of treating a mortons neuroma tend to have limited success.

Yes Kramer, I have been thinking about this: AlpineWalker has trouble in her ski boots so most (if not all) of the non-operative methods of managing this will not be possible.

AlpineWalker, I also note I was rather unkind to your surgeon, suggesting he (of course, could be a she) might not have mentioned one to two things he should have. Too much Shiraz Grenache Sad . I'm sure he has. If he has warned you of the possible loss of sensation, he sounds a caring chap to me.

Thanks for the suggests, esp the web sites. Still hoping to identify a worthwhile alternative to surgery, esp as I haven't had any alternatives suggested by the medicos, they started straight in with steriod injections.

Will probably try some pads on the sole of the foot and see how it goes.

PS wearing high heels isn't the cause, as i'm a dad in my forties, suspect the cause is consequential due to a number of non critical injuries to the foot, including a car driving on to it and stopping when I shouted, unfortunately still on my foot!

Thanks again for the advice.

AlpineWalker, extreme apologies for thinking you were female
It is more common in females, and I do know an "Alpine": marvelous lady, the spitting image of those tough country women portrayed by French and Saunders.
Another addition to the "Pseudonym" debate . Confused
