Hi Guys,
Last year when i was in Montgenvre three was a new Hotel complex under construction on the front row along towards the lift pass office and the Monte Express, does anyone know the complex i am talking about and if it is completed would like to take a look for this years trip, if so what's the name of the place?
We had a great time in Montegenvre last year but our accomodation wasnt up to much.
Help as always appreciated!

snowymum, yes I agree the OP probably meant the Napoleon development (named because Napoleon took his army over this pass into Italy - see the nearby obelisk), replacing a rather Soviet style hotel of that name used by French young people's holiday groups - can't think what they are called). I also love the skiing but I've not found a hotel I'm satisfied with yet. Last year I was at the Anova Hotel which was OK: quite plush but not ideally placed and we didn't like the food (basically the cook was trying to be inventive but didn't have a clue what he/she was doing). If they changed the cook it could be good. Any nominations I'd be interested too.

Snowball - The Napoleon apartments are being built on the site of what used to be a run down hotel - Hotel Napoleon. I think you may be referring to the Rois Mages budget group place which I suspect is still there.
There is also Hotel Chalet Blanc but I haven't tried it. It is located near hotel Annova in the new Hameau d'Obelisque. I think most of the higher end accommodation is in the newer area so doubt there is a luxury hotel in the village centre. We have children and prefer to self cater as you get more space in an apartment and also access to a decent swimming pool, spa etc at the higher end places. I suggest you look at Chalet des Dolines MGM apartments and consider eating out at the Hotel Chalet Blanc restaurant or a nice restaurant nearby called Le Jammy in the evenings. We have stayed in Le Hameau des Airelles apartments which are good value but maybe don't have the luxury you are looking for.

Hi all, interested in this thread as we are going to Montgenevre in January for the first time. Can anyone tell me what the road into resort is like, as in is it very steep and windy or a wide gradual climb similar to the roads to Val Cenis. Also can non skiers get a bus or walk to an Italian resort to meet the skiers for lunch. Many thanks.

Timbobaggins - if you are approaching Montgenevre from the Frejus tunnel (ie Italian side) it is an easy drive up to the resort It is a similar distance from Oulx to Montgenevre as it is from Modane to Val Cenis. The road from Oulx to Montgenevre climbs steadily and is a reasonable width. There are a few bends but no true hairpins.
Claviere is the nearest Italian resort and buses are infrequent. It would be possible to walk there but quite a trek and I'm not sure if there is a pavement all the way along. Taxi might be the best option. It would probably be easiest to meet non skiers in Montgenevre for lunch. There is the chalvet gondola which leads directly to a mountain restaurant. I think the gondola the other side goes high enough to take non skiers near the other restaurant.

snowymum,
Thanks, it would be nice as we have two non skiers in our party to be able to make it to Italy for Luch, as every time we do La Rosiere, they cannot get to La Thuile, so miss out. Looks like a taxi ride will be best.
We will be approaching from the Val Frejus tunnel. So many thanks.

The edges of Montgenevre and Claviere are about a mile apart, so walkable if you wish. The piste between the two is very, very gentle and at least half of it is fairly much flat so requires polling.

Yes, I said I was talking about the Napoleon Hotel. I ate there a few times (cheap and surprisingly good) and was told it was used sometimes for Colonie de Vacance (that was the name I was trying to remember). Not sure if it was true - might have been in the summer.

Snowball - sorry I didn't realise the Napoleon Hotel was used for holiday groups.

Timo.... doofer king! The road up is a bit steeper than to ValCenis, from the tunnel. From the Sierre Chev side it is much steeper. We are there at Christmas at the Hameau des Airelles, having stayed at Dolines last March. MGM Dolines was ok but its facilities were too small for the amount of people there eg gym, pool, changing rooms. Great resort.

As gad says, Briancon is worth a visit (you can get there on the bus). The old town (there is a new one below) is a World Heritage Site with massive fortifications and subsidiary forts to North, East and West. The current main entry gate, however, is more modern so makes no sense defensively.

And there's a great little poster shop in briancon old town that sells quite a few ski posters / pictures
But beware of the ice on those old cobbled streets, take your crampons !

You also get a days skiing at SC, L2A, or Alpe d`Huez with the Montgenevre pass. Make sure that you take the original paperwork with you to the pass office. If you get the chance, try a Darren Turner lesson in SC; he is very good and you can see his tutorials on utube

We are still trying to sort our annual trip out, we have decided to try and make Montgenevre happen as we really enjoyed the mountain last year.
Was just wondering if any fellow snowheads knew of a decent sized chalet thats decent and most importantly clean...and close top the lifts wold be a nice bonus!
There are 4 of us all male and we would like somewhere that would give us each a proper bed each without sofa beds etc.
If anyone knows of anything please let me know!

Go Monte seem to have the bulk of places to rent, we had a bit of an experience with them last trip and would rather avoid this time.
We are looking for a clean modern place if there is anything available

dave_wick, if you want clean and modern then you need to be looking at the new apartments suggested above by Shimmy Alcott or the Hameau des Airelles ones with Peak Retreats, or there are a couple of nice newish hotels which would be clean and modern. Not that much in the way of catered chalets or indeed chalets at all and they tend to be older.

Stayed at Chalet Ourson which is run by Crystal ski. Decent, basic chalet - only a couple of minutes walk down to the lifts, ski schools etc.
