Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Well this time last year snow was falling on the fell tops and the first skiing took place on the 3rd November. That looks unlikely that early this year so we will have to wait longer for first runs.

In the meantime the Club is planning to replace its electric motor controller (Thyristor) and is awaiting the delivery of some new webcams for installation. Lots of other work has been undertaken by the Members this summer.

Will try to post reports and any other news here as and when.

There is a huge amount of snow on the runs at Raise. So much so that the uptrack had to be dug out again this morning and is in a trench. Loading now has to take place from the downhill side to avoid the cable. We are not that far off the amount of snow we had in the last REALLY big winter of 1990. Cool

Still plenty of skiing at Raise but not the perfect blue sky and low himidity days of last week unfortunately. The snow is of course melting and is now two feet lower than 10 days ago. Fortunately there is still another 6 feet left on the tow track.

The day started by filling in a Crevasse that was threatening to swallow the tow track. Not a phrase that is often repeated about English skiing Shocked
Despite the loss of over 1m of snow depth over the last 3 weeks there is still loads left. Heavy overnight snow and further heavy falls this morning meant a day of predomiantly fresh snow runs. Brilliant Cool

Well, the tow track is now broken above Pylon 2 and probably at the summit as well. There has been no skiing on Raise for more than a week and though there is still lots of snow in Savages gully unless we get a reasonable fall of snow during the cool down next week, that will be it for the season.

It has however been yet another great ski season in the Lake District. The first runs began on Boxing day and there was excellent cover throughout February and March. The westerly gales and rain were cold enough for very heavy snow over the Lakeland tops. The south westerly wind was perfect for accumulating snow on the runs at Raise where they reached their deepest cover for 20 years. Daily digging was necessary to clear blown snow and create sufficient space under the pylon arms to safely run the tow.

I'm not sure how many days the tow has run this year but its been lots and most Members will have had good value from their season passes. I've managed about 6 or 7 days but that is enough to reduce my marginal cost to below £10 per day, great value by any standard snowHead There will be Members who have clocked up 30 or more. The fabulous thing about this season has been the quality of the snow. we've skied either fresh wind blown snow, firm damp snow or perfect spring snow. There has been very little frozen snow.

Unfortunately conditions have been poor across the Eden Valley in the North Pennines. At Yad Moss the tow has run about 7 days, which compares to more than 30 last year. Since January there has been no skiing. At Weardale it has been worse which is a shame because they are celebrating their 50th ski season this year. The Pennines have been poor because all the snow has come from the west and nothing from the north or the east. Yad Moss has usually been just too low.

Anyway it puts The lake District Ski Club in a good place for working parties this summer and enthusiastic skiers next year.
