Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Shims and binding

 Poster: A snowHead

Hi,

The new boots I am considering (tecnica cochise) but there is a recommended +6mm shim on the toe with my marker barons with AT boots.

Questions :

- would these go under the front of the binding?

- I take it these would these need to be drilled so they can be secured between the binding and the ski?

- is there another option - that does not require the binding to be unscrewed. - something on the boot, a toe piece?

- can the shop do any damage removing and re-securing the binding?

Thanks.

edit: If I remember correctly there there does seem to be an adjustment for AT boots on my barons? - they are still up the loft.

A recommendation to shim a Baron by whom? There's never been recommendation to do that.

The Duke/Baron/F12/F10's are DIN compliant with both alpine & AT boots as they have a manual toe height adjustment to allow for the differences in sole thickness. Because the toe height needs to be lowered to accommodate the thicker vibram sole of an AT boot it does increase the delta angle & yes, for most makes/models of AT boot the delta will be 6mm, ie the underside of the heel is 6mm higher than the underside of the toe when measured from the base of the ski.

However it is not possible to shim a Duke/Baron/F12/F10 toe by more than 2mm otherwise the connecting frame between the toe & heel bindings would need to 'bend' to get the heel binding to engage in the heel base plate - which, even if possible, would put a huge amount of strain on it.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Sorry I misunderstood - so there is delta of 6mm on the boot (depending on the manufacturer) - to allow for the thickness of the sole the Maker binding do have a toe adjustment but this delta should be fine for most skiiers and will not be considered too aggressive an angle?

Try it first, you're the non constant in these measurements, it may work, more or less be needed!
