Poster: A snowHead
|
The idea of skiing in Russia has never really been front of mind for me before, but wondering about Sochi. Presumably there will have been a load of investment into the resort prior to the Games next year.
Anyone been?
Whats it like?
Good snow?
Big mountain?

Sochi skiing is at Krasnaya Polyana which appears to have about 12 lifts.
I saw a few articles on skiing in Georgia which looked better, particularly Gudauri. http://www.skigeorgia.ge/gudauri/ Not sure about the political situation in that area though.

Plenty of reviews in russian. Google "красная поляна лыжи отзывы" and then use "translate this page" links in the search results
Let me know if some of translations don't make sense - I'll help
Hope this helps

I know quite a few Russians, many of whom are involved in infrastructure projects vaguely related to Sochi. They all say that the Black Sea Riviera is a bit of a dump and they wouldn't actually want to spend any time there, themselves. As for the mountains and the skiing, they all come to the Alps.
AFAIK the mountains are not that big and it is a bit of a trek from the city/towns to the individual mountains, but my knowledge is very sketchy on this one.
