Trying to sort out a ski trip for my family and in-laws. Really aiming at this at them as I have s selfish trip later to Saalbach to cater for my mates technical skills. Back to topic.
Have skied Soll and the region many times and as Mrs Fez has only been twice and not much more than a beginner to be honest I am looking for a place with great variety of easy blues, decent ski school but with links to elsewhere for those that want to push themselves. The others have been skiing 3-5 times. Scheffau sprang to mind. Doen't need to be a madhouse but is there likely to be a little apres going in Scheffau to make us not regret going to Soll. Age of the group 49-53 x four and 3 early-mid 20s.

Scarlet Fez, Scheffau would be my least favourite SkiWelt resort. Ellmau or Going better on that side or try Brixen.

Looks like since I posted its been decided that Scheffau might indeed be abit quiet and there is not alot available which brings us back to consider Soll itself.
I have a slight dilema, Mrs Fez is the least experienced skier and if Im honest is no more confident than a beginner and is scared stiff of the narrow road runs with steep drops. Can anyone remind me if after going up the main gondolla from Soll that there is access by blue runs to lifts to other blues only to get up and around the mountain which would not require her having kittens. She would be happy with a few nice wide long blues with a choice of restaurants etc to pass the time. Here's hoping!!!
She will be doing lessons as long as her fear of the road runs is not going to be something she will have to face straight away in Soll.

neilkav, please note my entry above re Mrs Fez, would westendorf suit her requirements for easy peasy blue and will the Apres in the village help nullify her fear.

As said above, Scheffau is pretty dead as far as nightlife goes.
Ellmau is a little better, and has a nice blue back to base (not a track type run at all), plus others easily available from the top.

Hi Scarlet Fez. Just booked our week in Soll for February - really missed not being there last year! I spent 3 years running as a "beginner" in Soll & the not so good news is that easy blues are hard to come by & most cruising involves a red whatever direction you travel. The better news is that the Ski school is great & the instructors look after nervous beginners really well. Most lessons were spent in Soll itself - on the 3 lifts to the right when you get to mid station. We did venture out towards Hopfgarten/Itter as well & that meant a short narrow track to the 2 man chair lift up to Rigi. I'm (still!) the same as Mrs Fez - don't like narrow tracks with steep drops but this one isn't too bad at all! Mr Scarlet is a much better skier than me so, when I was in school he'd ski over to Scheffau or Brixen but be back in Soll to meet up for lunch. As you know, I love it in Soll & preserve erred with ski school because the whole experience of being there was so great. Been to Ellmau as well but that's quite a spread out village and not so easy for mixed ability groups to meet up during the day. The nursery slopes are spread out down the valley & the funicular takes you up to the top where there are some lovely wide slopes but not what I would call really easy blues - again though great with instructors that know where to take you (yes, went to school there as well!!). Hope this doesn't sound too negative - I'd definitely recommend Soll for all abilities - just let the instructors work their magic on nervous beginners & they'll be hooked on the place - like me

How come you've ruled out Saalbach/Hinterglemm for the near beginners? Plenty of cruisy blues up and down the valley and with it being a valley it's easy for everyone to link up at the end of the day for a spot of apres.
That said the beginners we went with to the Skiwelt (stayed in Soll 3 years running) all preferred the Scheffau bowl (and runs down from it) to the Soll midstation.

Another vote for Westendorf or Brixen. Westendorf is the nicer village and has a good selection of blues including back to the village options. HochBrixen at the top of the Brixen gondola has one of the best selections of linked blues in the area and links up with a lot of runs in the Ellmau direction. Several lifts meet at the tops so a mixed group can stay in the same area but ski a variety of runs. Don't bother to ski down to Brixen unless the snow is perfect. It is S facing and the valley runs here die before anywhere else in SkiWelt so the lack of a decent valley blue shouldn't influence you. Brixen and Westendorf are linked by ski bus and by a rather complex ski (not for Mrs Fez, the run down to Brixen from the Westendorf side is properly red in places and long) so either village can ski either mountain. Our preference is Westendorf for a prettier village off the main road and it has ski schools and nursery slopes right in the village. Brixen seems a bit more spread along the road and all the schools etc happen at the top of the gondola.

Sounds to me like my wife is at a similar stage to yours and I decided after a week in Soll with the lads two years ago that I would not take her to Soll until she was a competent and confident red run skier. Have to agree with the others who recommend Westendorf which would fit the bill better given your brief.

Hi scarlet fez. Great news! Have looked at the Feldwebel in the past but not been there - other than for a Gluvwein on the terrace!! Think they've "done it up" fairly recently - Great location. We looked at the Bergland this year but in the end decided to go back to the Postwirt - less walking for après ski got the vote!!! When are you going? We'll be there Feb 1st

Just been to Ellmau this year. If it is cruisy "easy peasy" blues for your timid beginner wife then I am afraid you will be disappointed with Ellmau. yes it has blues, but I can safely say there wasnt one that was a lovely cruisy blue, without any hairy bits in the middle. The blue run at the end of the day back to the bottom of the funicular gets extremly cut up and really mogully and damned hard work.

Scarletgirl we are going Jan 4th but at moment we can't get into Feldwebel as Booking Co. claim we cannot get in any room including suites with 3 adults, rubbish just spoke to the hotel. In the meantime it appears the youngests boyfriend might be coming so will make the whole booking easier. Fingers crossed.

The blue down to the bottom in Ellmau is not great at the end of the day. The red can be better as it is less heavily skied and is often in better condition. Less experienced skiers can take the funicular railway home at the end of the day to avoid ruining their day.
The Kitzbuhel ski area (also accessed from the less expensive village of Kirchberg) has lots of lovely blues as well as the steeper slopes for which it is famous.
